Some thing alike may happen, if getting a variable through GET ot POST and forget to html_entity_decode them
But trim() also works some times

What is really funny about this thread is that after all the suggestions to use trim() in my particular situation html_entity_decode() was the answer. Don't know the reason why but it works for me

absolutely, a lesson for us all always trim() your email out of the posts or use tis function....
