Research Info about Community Portals

Does anybody have any idea where I can find industry related information concerning community portals?

Any info regarding trends and development on this particular type of web site is appreciated.

I have a small, not so great local community site. Soon, I hope, I'll be opening a couple more for neighboring cities. I haven't found much information dealing with such undertakings, and haven't found that many privately run sites.

I'd like to start a site specifically for sharing ideas, what works, what doesn't, ways to make money, etc... I did have someone that wanted to "partner" in building such a site, but they've lost interest I guess. I also emailed a couple community site owners asking if they would participate, share, etc and didn't get a response. If I can find a few people that are interested in using, working on, such a site I'd jump in with both feet!!
