Can someone PLEASE help: Mac OS x / MYSQL issue

Hello,
I can't get mysql to run on my Mac -at all. I just installed all on 10.3 and enter /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqld_safe and get errors. I'm using the database driven website book from sitepoint and can't get past pg 21 -which renders this book useless. Anyone, please help?

Also, I have to turn web sharing on each time I restart. Shouldn't it stay on?
