    Need Help - Website Crashing IE 5.0

    Hello,
    I'm using Internet Explorer 5.00.2920.0000 (the one that comes with w2k) and Windows 2000.
    While surfing my forums, Internet Explorer always crashes. Only using IE 5.5 solves the problem.
    Here is the error I get and here's the code I suspect, do you see something particular that may cause problems:
    Code:

    Look at a few pages and if you are using IE 5.0 & Windows 2000 it will crash.

    It crashed for me as soon as I loaded the page. IE5 and Win2k. No idea why, though...try emailing Microsoft, as no HTML should be able to crash your browser!

    That explains it (I'm on Windows 98).

    Well, using IE 5.5 fixes the problem. So I think there's no point of mailing Microsoft. I'd rather fix the code for my visitors that use IE 5.0 @ W2K. I'd really appreciate any ideas from the HTML & CSS gurus!

    Thanks

    You're using ID selectors for the links styles, I'm not sure your syntax is correct and I'm not sure you really want to be using ID selectors for link styles.

    Try changing them to use class selectors instead.

    eg
    Code:
    #all A:link, #all A:visited, #all A:active {
    	COLOR: #000020;
    }

    /* change the above to the following */

    A.all:link, A.all:visited, A.all:active {
    	COLOR: #000020;
    }

    gzip

    I think this has something to do with gzipping. I too have a crash while browsing my vB with IE5/win2000, but if I turn off the gzip output option it never crashes.

    I tried this also with other parts of my site (it's all in PHP). If I add
    PHP Code:
    ob_start("ob_gzhandler");
    it crashes after viewing several pages, if I remove it - no crashes. Weird

    Also, I guess admins of these forums should know something on this issue because:

    1. I've never had a crash at sitepointforums.com
    2. sitepointforums.com gzip's its output. You can check it here

    Thanks a lot alexk. I was going CRAZY looking for the error Yes, GZIP is the trouble maker. My browser doesn't crash when I turn it off. This is a strange issue because why do these forums don't crash but mine does GZIP is something that I can't give up so I'll head to the vB forums now

    well, since that's only happening with IE5 built for win2000, and upgrading to IE5.5 or IE6beta solves the problem, I'm about to continue using gzip, it really saves a lot of bandwidth...

    It's OK for me, I can always upgrade, but I have to think of my other visitors that may be using IE 5.0 and W2K. I can't make everyone upgrade

    Thanks

    What version of PHP are you using?

    There are some bugs in the gZip libraries and ob_gzhandler in PHP before version 4.0.5 that can cause memory leaks or incomplete compressed packets to be sent. We use 4.0.5 here.

    There is also an acknowledged bug in Internet Explorer 5.0 that will cause the browser to stop functioning if it receives incomplete compressed packets.

    At least this is the way things have been explained to me.

    I would suggest upgrading to at least php 4.0.5 and compiling in the latest zlib library to see if that solves the problem.

    Hi W. Luke, thanks for the input!

    I've got PHP 4.0.6 and zLib 1.1.3 on my server, and I'm sure it's not ob_gzhandler problem since vB doesn't use it at all and the crash occurs both w/ob_gzhandler and w/vB's method
