Hey all
sorry if this isnt really in the right forum..but anyways...
Ive set up servers before, (apache, with php and mysql) just to play with and kinda see how they work. However, they have always been on windows.
I have decided that I want to install and additional os on my comp (unix) and have a boot option during start up.. anyways before I start looking into this.. is unix free?? Few of my friends say it is, and others say otherwise.... If so, where can I download it.. also, are there any articles or places where I can visit to teach me and help me out a little here?

Linux costs money to buy on the store shelf (packaging, shipping, documentation, etc).
Yes an official distro off the shelf costs a few bucks because you are also buying some level of service and support with it. However, in my neck of the woods, you can buy an unofficial distro (which even comes with a reference pocket book) which includes both Mandrake and RedHat for about US $10. This is available at almost any newsagency. Well worth it over the hassle of downloading over the net (assuming you don't have a really fast broadband connection)..
