    Question Google map style scrolling

    Hello,

I'm looking to implement something very similar to Google Maps scrolling.

I've got huge images, 5MB, stored on the server. Rather than making the user download such a big image I'm planning to cut them up in to 128x128 pixel tiles and display a portion of the tiles to the client.

I'm wondering if anybody knows of any groundwork already done to achieve this?
My searching so far has found one similar idea:

    http://landmarker.neologasm.org/lm/place_lm/place_id=14

There's also a quick technical overview on the Google Maps technology @ http://jgwebber.blogspot.com/2005/02...ng-google.html

But nothing I can use to get started quickly.

I have been playing with similar,

I have not completed mainly due to web space.

I can scroll, magnify a map and was going to put the focused map in the center of 3*3 image split swapping the external images and recentering as the map is scrolled.
External images would only be loaded on demand.

I am currently using 400*400px image which can be magnified between 100px and 600px.

If you can give me a url to nine maps or more of about 400*400 that can make up a split image I will do more with it.

I will upload what I've got to

Thanks for the reply. The example you've done isn't exactly the same technique as i'm after.

I would like to recreate someting in a similar vein to the old 8/16-bit 2d 8-way platform scroller game engines. This involves loading and displaying tiles as and when they are needed (within the viewport).

Your example worked off a single image which was then hidden inside a DIV and scrolled around.

This is something on my todo list. I'll work on this after some other DHTML widgets, but it might take a while...

    Has this gotten anywhere?

I'm interested in doing something similar to this, for a number of gaming worlds (some of which don't provide maps).

To recap, I'm looking for something similar to the Google Maps behavior, with the ability to stream in different map sections.
