    doctype question/Paul's 3 column layout

In trying to validate my pages, I find almost all my errors are due to not using strict xhtml. Rather than closing all those tags in my 40+ pages, can I just change the doctype?

    I'm using Paul's 3 column equalizing layout, which includes <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">.

Will it mess up if I just change the doctype to html?
    Thank you!

Have you tried changing it? I assume that would answer your question as to whether or not it would mess up. Depending on how your site is structured obviously, changing the doctype could be as easy as changing it once in a header template or replacing it in all 40 pages. To find out if it helps or breaks the pages, I'd suggest changing it in one or two.

Sorry if you've already tried that and this post is just an insult to your intelligence.

It would help if we could see an example page.

Stoavio, no you didn't insult my intelligence, I just got to the point where it was easier to ask than to try something else yet again, only to be frustrated yet again. As I was, when I changed the doctype.

I'm still working on the darn thing and will be back with more questions.

Kravvitz, the site is at www.cityofferndale.org/pd and I am way open to suggestions.

    Thanks!
