It's a wave that's caught on. Someone stuck a picture of some sort on their avatar and put them name on the side or one of the "walls" of the image, and now everyone seems to be doing it.

Out of all the avatars on SP...which one would you say is the best. I mean there are some good ones that can get squeezed into that tiny 60x60 box, but very few master the size they have to play with and use it to show what talents they have

Sparkie, I'm impressed I won a cuddly Gatomon at the seaside last weekend. I only had to put about 6 in the machine to get it too.

Correct spelling in English is Cheque.

Check is for ie Checking the brakes, or checking the PC is working.

Well, not so long ago (600 years ?), English was still 80% French
I think it can still be noticed in Shakespeare's plays.

So is that where we get Franglais from?

Actually, I shouldn't mock...not only is my brother married to a French woman, I'm actually part French - though only a teensy weensy bit!

Apparently, I have ancestors who came over from France at the time of the Revolution and settled in the West Country in order to escape the blood shed. The story that's been passed down is that they worked the guillotine (sp?), but I don't know how true that is.

In the 18th (?) century, England decided to change the spelling of a lot of its words to make them more like the original French versions of the words (or what they thought were the original French versions).

That's why modern english is now "colour" and "metre".

The trouble is, they broke a lot of the rules of the English language, and made things a whole lot more complex. They also got some words completely wrong, and thus when anybody tries to learn modern english there are so many exceptions to the rules.

In many ways, American English is simpler to learn, because they have kept the former spellings of many words. In some cases, though, the Americans have changed words to make them even less like the French language, such as "check".
