A tribute to the Iron Man...

To a legend...to a man that was baseball....to a man that represented everything good in professional sports....everything noble....to a man who set records like some change their socks....to a man who has less hair but more class than most people I know....to a man who set aside 45 minutes before every game for 21 years to sign autographs...to a legend...

2,632 consecutive games (1981-1998) passing Lou Gehrig's previously held record of 2,130 on September 6, 1995...

3,000 hits and counting (April 15, 2000) leading the Orioles to a 6-4 win over the Minnesota Twins...

    8,243 consecutive innings in 904 games (1981-1987)...

21 years with the same team makes him the all-time leader in that category...

American League MVP 1983 and 1991...

American League Rookie of the Year in 1982...

Seventh major league player to reach 3,000 hits and 400 homeruns in a career...

    345 homeruns as a shortstop...

20+ homeruns in each of first 10 seasons...

Gold glove award in 1991 and 1992...

Hold highest single season fielding percentage for a shortstop .996 set in 1990...

16 consecutive All Star Game starts (1984-1999)...

Cal Ripken, we take our hats off to you. I speak for sports fans all over the world, young and old, male and female, every race and nationality when I say, "Thank You."

As much as I respect him, I've lost some of my respect for him over the last few years, as his play has been poor, but his team has almost had no choice but to play him. I'm sure he meant well, but I'm really dissapointed when athletes do that.

Whatever you say...but I'll really respect someone who will lay down his career so as to not harm his team's chances at winning. That's real self less-ness. Cal Ripken is a man -- he's not a God. I sure hope no one jumps all over me just because I'm saying this about Cal Ripken. If it's correct, it shouldn't matter who I'm saying it about.

true...he's not God, but he is arguably one of the, if not THE greatest sportsman of all times. I agree he should have retired last year, but that doesn't take anything away from his accomplishments...

Doesn't it? If he can get credit for helping his team through his play, shouldn't he lose credit for hurting his team the same way? More accurately, he still deserves credit for his individual feats aside from his team -- that's a helluva lot of games he played without quitting. He's a hard worker: no doubt about that. In my opinion, probably the 2nd greatest SS of all time.

I dare not ask who #1 is?

Anyways, Cal's batting average and hitting numbers may have plunged, but he is as fine a defensive playter as he ever was...

I won't even comment on defense -- I won't pretend to know what I'm talking about there. I can only watch and try to make judgement, though looks can be deceiving. We have maybe 2 or 3 methods of measuring defense, and they all seem to say Rey Ordonez is nothing special, despite his jumping and diving, so I give up.

Honus Wagner is #1, of course.

Bowls a mean leg break from around the wicket.

That's rather bold of you chaps to bring up the cricket. Can't wait for the first test match of the Ashes. Bring it on!

I have devised a cunning plan to ensure we do not lose.

I am currently studying the fine art of rain dancing

Anyone in Manchester should have seen my first attempt this morning!!!

Joking apart I hope things are a little more civilized than the one day tests. Anyone going to watch?

Sowen, talk to the cricketing authorities. Put this forward as a cunning plan to stop crowd invasions. As soon as England lose you can get up from your seat, do your jig-jig-jig, down comes the rain and no-one feels like invading the pitch. Perfect. You might even get free tickets!

Believe me, If I started doing a jig-jig-jig, it won't need to rain, everyone will run screaming

H, Abso-bloody-loutly Our test form is much better than our 1 day. Bring it on Australia - What what

As for baseball? I hate it, although I do have repsect for people like Cal and most especially Lou Gehrig who played entire games with broken fingers and toes.
