With a lot of free services biting the dust or going to paid services, which ones out there can't we live without?
In other words, what online services are worth paying for?

hosting is the only one worth paying for.
everything else you can do yourself with with a little elbow grease.
yeah there isin't really many services that are worth it. Maybe a mail list handler would be nice for large mailing lists but thats about it. Even that is not needed because you can do it yourself if you want to. Just sometimes its easier to get a service that does a lot of the work for you.
Garlic bread, I've tasted it, it's the future

I think they both hit the nail on the head, if you want to do it yourself you can do anything!!
Sometimes however it is not worthwhile reinventing the wheel when you can buy one cheaply...for most of us time is money so if it is going to take 10hrs to build something that only costs $20 it is not worthwhile..
Having said that i am the type that likes to do everything for themself (if you want something done properly do it yourself) with webdev though i think thats because i like to have full control over the end product!!

for every service out there you can find a free script that can do the same thing. i don't pay to put cheese on a whopper so you know i'm not gonna pay for some other website tell me my statistics or run my message board.

At the end of the day someone has to pay the bills! I used to write scripts and distribute them freely although i got tired of dealing with all the people that expect everything for nothing.
You also pay for what you get....

for big scripts like vbulletin or something i can see reasonable considering that i did buy vbulletin but some scripts are so simple that its not worth the dough. like stat scripts and what not.

True yes some scripts are so simple they do not warrant paying for.
I would argue however whether statistic scripts are one of those scripts...i have never programmed a stats script so i dont know but i can imagine they are quite involved to program..

maybe there are like a million of them now. i can't really imagine paying for one at this point.
