I'm afraid of losing ranking due to site makeover...

I've just redone a bed and breakfasts' website. The previous site was very plain, but it was on the first page of Google for the keywords it should be listed under.
I've at least quadrupled the content on the site, added articles, images, alt'ed all the pics, analysed proper keywords, extended page titles.
But I still have the SEO newbie fear that screwing around with something that's working will cause a problem. These people book 90% of their business through this site, so I'm being as careful as I can.
    Any words of wisdom?

Make incremental changes. Change one portion of the page layout at a time. That way if something affects your rankings negatively you can swicth back that one piece and be okay. This is also a great way to see just how SEO really works.

I know its obvious and you've probably already got it covered, but to avert a potential disaster, make sure you maintain the same pages as the old site e.g. same filenames or use url rewriting, otherwise you'll lose all the current rankings.
