Has SitePoint sold your email address to a spam list?

I make a habbit of using a separate email address for each web site I subsribe to. In the past month or so, I have received two search engine marketing emails from a third party site via my email account I use exclusively for SitePoint.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Yeah, a few times. They even sent me receipts.

It's not in the SitePoint privacy policy that they would be doing this.

I can't be sure, but I don't think I have ever recieved mail from companies other than SitePoint because of SitePoint.

From their privacy policy:

The email addresses collected from subscriptions to the SitePoint newsletters are not sold, or disclosed to any third parties. These addresses will only be used by our business to send out SitePoint communications (for example, the SitePoint newsletters). You will not receive any mailings you did not request.

It's possible that spammers have guessed that email address. I get a ton of emails to random addresses at my domain. It's a common spam tactic.

I don't think there is anyway they could have guessed my email address at my domain. It uses random numbers and phrases.

Also, I have not subscribed to the Newsletter. Only the forum. Perhaps someone inside the company that has access to the data has missused it.

The emails you got are very likely from SitePoint, not a 3rd party. As a past customer, we provide you with special offers on all new products we release including 'The Search Engine Marketing Kit'. Have a read through the email again and you should see that it's from SitePoint.

Rest assured, your email address hasn't been sold.

I'll read over the email again. It was related to search engine marketing, but I don't recall seeing anything in the email related to sitepoint. As I recall, the only way I made the association was with the TO email address I set up specifically for the sitepoint forums.

I've been a member for some time and have only received two of these type of emails in the entire history of forum usage, but these two have been in the past month and they both appear to be from the same company.

I will probably just create a new email account and update my profile, then watch to see if it happens again. It appears from your comments that this is not typical of the sitepoint site and somehow my email address has gotten tainted. I just wanted a quick poll to see if I was the only one, and it appears I am.

I would suggest forwarding the email to mmj (tom@sitepoint.com) so he can look into it further. It might give him the lead to track down if there is a problem some where.
