Does your HTML code affect google rankings?

I was wandering in what way your HTML code affects your rankings on Google. Does google look prefer table-less designs, what about nested tables, the use of <font> tags instead of css, ... ?

Any thoughts, experiences, tips ? ...

google does not consider "code quality" in its algorithm as of currently. things in your code that make it difficult to spider are javascript, very slow loading pages caused by large image designs, and barely any text. basically what google does when it visits your site is strip all the html and just leave the readable text behind. this text left behind is used by google to find relevant words or phrases to query by the searcher.

But, considering that Google strips your html code, it would have far less work with a tableless design
AND the page size would be smaller which is good?

well yes like pages such as archives with little to no html google favors because it can quickly index and move on but be considerate to the searcher who will find your page, many will just leave if your entire site looks like an archive with pages that have very little customization. so try to either blend the two or maybe create an archive for your site. also try to stay away from using images for category names and mostly everything as it lessens the text google is able to find relevant words and phrases in.
