Coke or Pepsi? (Marketing question, too)

You can't beat the real thing, in my opinion. But it seems that Pepsi is spending all the bucks in marketing and what not. You really don't see that many Coke commercials. And when you do, they don't have the highly recognizable stars all through their ads.

Is it working? Is Pespi overtaking Coke as the cola of choice? Or is Pespi wasting loads of money to remain second place?

(actually Dr. Pepper is better than either, but oh well...)

Anyway, to relate it to web marketing, can a product or portal or name brand become so established that the $$ spent for advertising and marketing can be reduced dramatically compared to the competition? If so, how do you know when you get to that point?

Personally I like the 7 up commercials. Especially that blind taste test one. The sprite ones are pretty good too.

One thing you have to remember when comparing coke and pepsi is that coke is a relatively small company when compared with pepsi.

Pepsi owns doritos, frito lay, taco bell, pizza hut, KFC, and alot of other things I'm forgetting.

I voted Coke. Who really cares would be a close second, but if there's a choice and the price is the same I get Coke. That might be a result of 40+ year old marketing, though. The Saturday Evening Post ads for Coca Cola are still sharp memories. Also Coca Cola glasses. You can get reproductions of both all over the place, so I'd guess I'm not alone in that. Maybe they just don't make ad campaigns like they used to?

Dr Pepper floats-my-boat, only thing is that it is not as widely available here as it is in the States - and we don't have 'refills' - which sucks!

I agree with bman. I'll drink either, whatever costs less.

Both companies had similar 2000 Sales..
    Coca-cola - $20.458 Billion (US)
Pepsico - $20.438 Billion (US) *60% come from Frito Lay
    http://www.hoovers.com/co/capsule/9/...,10359,00.html

But aside from the potato chips and the orange juice, Coke still leads in US sales.
    In US Supermarkets
    Coke 36%
    Pepsi 32%

But, Coke has dominance is a Coke vs Pepsi beverage war. Pepsi is not catching up to them much in that aspect. My vote is for Coke by the way.

They have LEMON Pepsi? Was that a joke? Yuck...

Ah youth! At soda fountains (ancient history 101) you could get cherry, lemon and vanilla cokes. If lemon worked for cokes, it should work for pepsi. It was different when they mixed it in right there, though. Much better than the bottled flavors.

I used to mix all kinds of stuff with coke, If i went to a restaurant and everyone ordered tea and i order coke, if they didnt use there lemon that came with the tea i would put it in my coke, it was pretty good. I also used to mix apple juice with coke. That was good also.
i guess i am just a strange strange person.

I suppose it would be straying too far off topic to inquire about peoples' habits regarding mustard and hamburgers? I live in downstate NY and when I ate at a McDonald's in upstate NY, there was mustard on the burger. I was told that they do that everywhere but where I live. I was wondering if that was true. I'm also wondering why they're paying me while I sit here and pose these questions...

the first rule of fight club...

Coke wil ALWAYS be the dominant soft drink for one reason.

    Brand recognition.

There are prodcuts that are the pinnacle of their genre. Kleenex for example. No one says "can you give me a Puffs?". They always say "Can I have a Kleenex?". The same goes for Coke, especially in the South. You go to a restaurant and say "Can I have a Coke?" and the waitress will say What kind of Coke do you want, referring to any of 4-8 selections that they have available. It's not just the name of the product anymore. It's the name of the type of product.

yeah i wonder what happened to Crystal Clear Pepsi.. I must have been the only one that actually liked it so they got rid of it??
And i never did get teh Pepsi 1 craze? It only has one calorie? so what, diet pepsi has none, they both have artificial sweeteners, and Pepsi 1 and 5 more grams of Sodium that Diet Pepsi (i think it is 5 anyway. been awhile since i checked). And to me it doesnt taste that much different, I think it was just a marketing Scam.

I like Fanta, Mt. Dew and Dr. Pepper.

Coke & pepsi are nothing great... though between the two I prefer coke.

I don't get all this "you can't beat the real thing" stuff -- there is no real thing. It's all just soda. Anyway, I wish the file upload option was still around, I have a funny picture related to this topic.

I always liked Fanta. You can't find it in North Armerica, which is odd since it is made by Coca-Cola.

Actually you can get it some places. They just recently started selling it at the grocery store near my house. (I live in the U.S.) They don't have all the flavors, including my favorite: lemon, but I like the other ones too!

I sway between the two - hate Dr Pepper (you either love it....) and am a huge fan of Fanta Grape (which I drank in Africa 15 years ago but is rare in the UK)

    (ps: never seen lemon Pepsi.....)

(pps: for once I agree with twt - they're all just sodas)

I voted coke... In terms of marketing as well... In the past coke always spent much more on advertising and marketing and creating an "image". Pepsi has no image, it's "just a drink" (though coke is, technically, it is also an "image").

Coke could theoretically sit back for 5 years and they wouldn't lose an ounce of market penetration. After that you start to realise you need to re-appeal to the young audience starting to have buying power again. This is what coke seemed to do through the 80s and 90s anyways... They'd have a huge marketing push for 5 years, then do on and off stuff (coke card is the current "thing") for another 5 then push again... Expect another big push in the next 2-3 years (olympics are a good place).

However, either way, coke OR pepsi aren't the biggest worldwide distributors of soft drinks
