What Does the Alexa Rating Mean?

I've read the description on Alexa's website but it's very confusing!

I'm currently re-wording the page where people read about my site and purchasing my banner ad packages. So I'm trying to "talk up" the site as much as possible.

My current Alexa rating is 28,995 which I think it's pretty good. Would it be inaccurate to say something like:

"Alexa has deemed mydomainhere.org the 28,995th most popular website on the Internet."

Alexa measures traffic, not popularity. And not very well.

No, it wouldn't be inaccurate as long as you mention Alexa/source.

Alexa in the minds of most people means nothing. Webmasters have seemed to deem Alexa as pointless. It may look good to advertisers though, and they will probably already know what the ranking is.

Most actually won't care, so you can just say that you have an Alexa ranking of 28,995, and make sure to say out of 100,000. It makes your web page sound better, despite the pointlessness of Alexa rankings.

Cool. I suppose it can't hurt to mention it!

Isn't the alexa rating basically just based on people who use their toolbar? So theoretically a webmaster could plug the toolbar and get all his/her users to get the toolbar and thus increase ranking.

I believe so. But still, does the advertiser know that? Does every website have a high ranking? No to both. It does sound good, although isn't the best thing for an advertiser to base his decision upon. Even if it is based on something ridiculous, it is still unique - only one person holds #1 on Alexa ranking, not 20 websites.

The thing with Alexa is that the higher ranking you are, the stats tend to be relatively more accurate.

You mean like Fastclick (number 9, ahead of Blogger.com)?

Or AOL pages (mentioned by Alexa as probably being way wrong since the Alexa toolbar doesn't install on the AOL client)?

I think you might have a point, actually, they probably have a better sample of visitors for the top than the bottom which might lead to better results. I don't know.

It's just an opinion, but I think that "Alexa has deemed mydomainhere.org to be among the 29,000 most popular websites on the Internet." sounds better.

Well, I mean like relatively more accurate. Obviously the top 10 is more accurate than the 10,000 to 10,010. Personally speaking, none of any rankings can be really accurate unless you have the raw access files to compare with.

Even if Microsoft launches something similar to Alexa by taking samples via IE, it still won't be a perfect result since they don't control the market 100%.

I wish datacenters reported traffic to a centralized source that would make the information public. I'm sure honest numbers could be achieved somehow.

You wouldn't use Alexa for that, you would use your logs.

At least I hope you would.
