Session variables, store user id etc

Is this a good idea, or do people use different approaches ? Believe there's a 20 minute time period for em which doesn't sound like what l need.

The 20mins is only the time till the next asp page is called, so it's usually enough. I changed mine to 5mins, then refresh it with javascript so a user can spend any amount of time on a page.

You can change the time with session.timeout=n
