Promotion through Contests .. Will it work?

As my signature let's it out, I run a php community website called Community-php. My attempt to get the community website on its feet is rather different from what all you guys geenrally try. Its not a referral system, neither is it direct viral marketing.

I'm planning to organize a PHP programming contest in July giving out decent relevant prizes, and the prerequisite for participation in the contest is website membership and 7+ posts in the boards.

Will this event work in the long run? I am sure my website will get good activity before, during and after the contest, will my website be able to hang on to the members after the contest is over?

Does anybody else have any experience running contests? Any narrations that would be useful for me? Thanks!

So make another contest after the first one, if it's working. If it's too big to do so, scale it down. I don't believe in building your marketing around one time grand events. Do stuff that works every day. Small improvements every day makes huge improvements over time.

    Good luck!

That's not something I'll be in a position to afford.

Before I f^ked up my community with too many codes and stuff, I ran some contest and it help boost activity for awhile, then died down. I really couldnt afford to keep giving away stuff just so my memebers would be active and stuff.

Unless your community becomes profitable? Do smaller contests... little, cheap things, or even things that cost you nothing.
