working hard is hard work
Yes, Netscape 8 downloads a filter list on a regular basis that determines whether to use the MSIE engine or the Gecko engine or even to turn off scripting support. Basically unless the site is a major site it will default to the Gecko engine.Originally Posted by Ainslie X11

That's pretty cool. Is there a way to report sites as "Best viewed in MSIE" back to netscape so they can verify and/or add it to the list?Originally Posted by KLB

I got the impression that this wasn't the critera used to end up on the MSIE list. It sounds like only "trusted" sites by "major" companies end up on the MSIE list. In otherwords, small sites like yours or mine can "forget about it."Originally Posted by someonewhois

Oh. It's for security, not for rendering.

That's all good - but I still can't find an OSX version... did they port it ?

It is unlikely they will port it as it depends on the MSIE engine and Microsoft no longer supports IE for Mac.Originally Posted by Ainslie X11

Netscape 8 I have to say is a joke, but I guess it is better than Internet Explorer. It would be nice if it got some users away from IE, as I'd rather have a Gecko browser render my website, over IE.
It also said that my Opera 8 was outdated, lol.

As far as I can tell there won't be a Mac version or Linux for that matter.Originally Posted by Ainslie X11

This was probably because you are blocking cookies. I've seen reports that their site will even report Firefox 1.0.4 as outdated if cookies were blocked.Originally Posted by charmedlover

I agree. Every little bit helps. I would wager that the tech crowd would pretty much dismiss Netscape as they either have swicthed to Firefox by now or have decided to not leave IE. Unfortunately the only other reach Netscape seems to have is through their portal. I wonder how effective it is at pimping their warez?Originally Posted by KLB

Personally I wouldnt even waste the time to download it ... AOL has managed to destroy Netscape just like everything else they touch...

AOL actually has their own web browser that they've been working on for some time. It is completely IE based (the last time I checked):

Netscape is pretty much gone, kinda sad to see the history-making browser pretty
much gone for good. And KLB, I have cookies enabled, lol.
It's way too bloated-- enough said

Well, lo & behold she tries to uninstall AOL months later only to find it's wrapped its clutches around most aspects of her laptop.
I'm not going to even try to get rid of it all.
If I end up getting the task of fixing it I'm formatting and reinstalling windows (minus AOHell).

I just downloaded netscape 8 and I love it so far... The interface looks great. It has tabbed browsing which is a step up from IE. So far, I am liking it better then Firefox! I know I am going to get death threats for saying that because Firefox is supposed to be sooooo good... But I think I am switching to Netscape all together!

Actually Netscape 8 is built upon the Fox with a bit of IE thrown in. One thing to keep in mind, however, is that Netscape isn't getting the Firefox fixes as quickly as Mozilla's browser gets so you may find yourself without important updates. Looks at how long it took them to get even the critical fixes applied that came out a week or so before Netscape 8 was released. (I'd give you a link to more info but my blog got moved recently and I'm AFI from my host to get the blog available again. I do have most of the content on my forums, but the content of that post hasn't been migrated into the forum yet.)

Ever since Mozilla crashed I have used Netscape 7.2 . I didnt like 8.0 and recomend that no one upgrades to it. To much extra junk like the aol browser has. i have been very happy with Netscape.
