    HTML 4.01 Strict.

HTML or XHTML is unimportant as long as it's served as text/html (which you'll have to do to cater for IE).

A strict doctype does not allow very much presentational markup, so provided that you validate your pages, it will help you learn how to separate structure from presentation. That's a very good thing in the long run.
