After a long think, I think rep should be abolished, and stay that way.

Maybe the admin team are set on this but I'd like to find out if members support the decision.

I think we should attract more sitepointers here to have a better idea on what members think this needs more point of views

I'm not set on anything. I'm telling you what actually happened: rep has been abolished. I actually liked rep and tried to convince the rest of the staff that it was worth saving.

Yeah I liked reputation- it shows whether your posts are actually helpful posts or just spam, or if you've been helping people by PM, which obviously doesn't show up on your post count.

A "better" rep system would be welcome (although I'm not sure how I would make it better), but honestly, I don't think the payoff would be worth the investment required to change the rep system. I think it's already pretty complicated, and as forum owners know, the more you tinker with the code inside, the harder it becomes to upgrade.

I think the rep system should be returned with minor easy to implement changes. These changes could include:

    1) either making negative rep votes have no impact on one's rep score, or increasing the rep power required to be able to take away rep points (using a code tweak similar to what I showed in another thread). If higher rep power members are going to be able to take away points when they leave negative rep, the negative rep power factor could be 1/3 instead of 1/2 (rounded down). By its very nature this would require a rep power of 3 before someone could take rep points away.

    2) giving everyone by default the ability to give positive rep points as long as they themselves have a positive rep. Again this could be done via the very simple change I posted in the other thread on this topic.

    3) ban rep lovefest threads.

The cost in time these changes would require is 1/2 hour to tweak the rep calculations in the functions_reputation.php include and upload and test the changes. It would take fifteen minutes to post a change to the rules banning rep lovefests.

I find that I really miss the feedback from the old rep system. I was nice to occasionally see a message about one of your posts. Sending a PM does not seem an adequate replacement, as there would be to much effort involved to quote/link it.

Thumbs up Bring it back more prominently

I think it should be back, but in a more prominent way - similar to how eBay has it right up front.

I think quite the opposite: it should be more private. It seems the majority of rep supporters liked the comments left by members. There's no need to quantify that and display it publicly. Plus having a quantifiable rep system favors older members and could disenfranchise newer ones.

Hmm, maybe the number of pips displayed should be calculated by dividing the total rep count by the number of years (rounded up) someone has been a member. This calculation wouldn't need to effect anything more than the pip display (e.g. rep power for granting rep points and the cutesy phrase could be calculated the same as it is now).

This would remove the visual disparity between old users and new users. At the same time, it would prevent old users from being able to simply rest on their laurels if they want to keep lots of pips. This would force Vinnie to work harder

That would be an interesting solution.

I thought of a way to refine it a little instead of always rounding up the years, don't round, just make sure that years are at least equal to one. This way, users don't have a sudden drop in pips at their anniversery.

I could work my way through the vBulletin code to figure out how to implement this idea.

I should have clarified myself, you would have to work harder to keep all of your pips

On my forum, I disabled negative rep for <100 posters, since it was the newcomers who tended to leave negative rep not realizing it could hurt others' feelings. I also enable showing who left rep, as I think it's important to be accountable. Anonymous repping does invite a bit of rep vandalism, I think.

I think with about one hour of work, I could provide hacks that SP could incorporate that would encompase my suggestions and biggazillakilla's <100 post suggestion.

I love that idea! I think the Rep. system should be brought back with new rules.
