logging on to mysql - with interest

I have installed mysql on redhat linux. I attempt to connect using
root as user but get an error message saying that I do not have permission? Trying to connect through $dbcox = @mysql_connect("127.0.0.1","root",""); gives the same result.
The interesting part is that this works if I use ip 192.168.0.5 which is a windowsbox on the same network! I can connect to the windows box with any user name and any password.
I am sure I am doing something very silly but just can't see it.
Any help would be greatly apreciated.

If you connect to "localhost" instead of "127.0.0.1", does it work? If so, read this -- it covers these idiosynchrasies in the MySQL access control system.
