Open OO.o Created .doc file in either OO.o or MS Office

    hi all,

i am developing an assembly notes database. as part fo its functionality, i want to link to product number .doc files that graphically display some of the issues discussed in the db text.

the main production computer will be running OO.o (OpenOffice.org). Other computers will be running MS Office.

I have created .doc files in OO.o Writer and verify they display well in MS Office Word.

if the file exists, i want to display a link to the file.

if the link displays, i want the user to be able to click the link to the file and have the file open in the OO.o if it exists on the machine and MS Office if OO.o doesn't exist on the machine.

can anyone point me in the direction of a tutorial that covers this sort of thing (i googled with no luck) or provide some code snippets to help me along?

    tia...

in addition, the solution would ideally work on both linux and windows 32 operating systems.
