    Page Rank

    Morning guys

Someone asked me today 'is page rank important?' Does having a really high page rank mean that you'll be listed higher up in the search engine?

Pagerank imo is only important if you are selling/trading links, otherwise it doesn't do too much... Backlinks will get you higher rankings...

It does but not as much as other factors. You should be aware of a page's PR but you shouldn't focus on it exclusively. Some Webmasters try so hard to increase their PR they forget to do everything else and then can't understand why their pages don't rank well.

The best way to get back links is to ask for them. The best way to ask for back links is to simply post a message at the bottome of each of your pages asking or encouraging people to link to the page in question if they found the page valuable or useful.

    That method is very slow.

If you don't want to spend money buying links then fastest method is to create something free and force users to provide link in exchange for that free product. For example create theme for some software that is used on web (like phpnuke theme, or phpbb style or style for any other popular web software), put link to your website in footer of page and give away that theme for free. If it looks good then users will happily install it on their website and will automatically provide lots of links to your website. If you don't know how to design and code then you might hire someone to do it for you and it most likely won't be cheap, but in long run it will be many times cheaper than buying links.

Yes it is slow, but very worth doing. It costs nothing and requires no effort after intial set up. The best thing is that these links often times are the most stable and last for years.

Granted other link building methods like you mentioned also work very well and even faster in some cases, but the very nature of the cost benifit ratio of implementing this link generation method makes it one of the must do methods.
