Local keyword searches?

How do I find what people are typing in to find a product by a certain keyword or the product itself? Is this possible? In otherwords I need to know what I should include in keywords and content text for best results.

Also what is the best way to get listed in a local area? I do know that the site I will be working on has a main two keywords for this. I am not sure if there is anything else or not. Anyone have any suggestions for this as well so far as keywords and content text?

As usual people who try to find some local services use local directories (rarely) or (mostly) just add to they keyword search the name of the city or state (for example Chicago web design, Meat balls Atlanta, etc.). Usually such local keywords are not so competetive...
