    Possible Trojan: Homepage Changes

I've noticed that whenever I restart my computer, my homepage is changed to some URL I don't recognize. I'm running Norton AntiVirus as we speak (also updating Virus Definitions). Has anyone else had this type of problem?

Yes, I've had that problem as well. Norton never detected anything . So, I just changed my homepage and ignored it. Never happened again for a long time... and then it does it again, and I just repeat.

I don't know what to do, I know I could reformat my pc... but thats a big hassel.

Well, mine seems to have stopped for now. I ran Norton (scanned the system), and it didn't detect anything. I deleted some temporary files (TEMP and some of the Temporary Internet Files folders), restarted the computer, and the homepage problem was gone. Weird.

What homepage was yours set to against your will, out of curiousity?

This kind of thing can happen as a result of visiting a web site. Not only can they put a cookie (I believe) that changes your home page, they can also put additions to your bookmarks/favorites without your knowledge. Warez sites are notorious for this sneaky behavior. You may have to delete cookies, temp internet files to get rid of the problem. Good news, it's probably not a virus.

That has happened as well; additions to the favorites.

I'm not sure what site it was exactly, but it was some search engine that I never heard of it. If I hear it, I would remember it.

Could it have been GoHip, WebMaster AJ? I don't remember visiting it, but somehow it forced itself to be my homepage, and loaded a "GoHip Bar" with links to places. I have heard others having the same problem. I was able to remove it, though.

Yeah, sometimes those SpyWare programs will do things of this sort. I run ZoneAlarm and I would recommend anyone who doesn't to, too. You can detect if your computer has a trojan horse this way, too, because they send information back to the creator and ZA will detect and report this.

Perhaps I'm misusing the term a tad, then: ZoneAlarm seems okay to me, I'm just getting my homepage reset every now and then.
