I doubt that this blog regularly receives 500.000 visits per day. Anyone got any reliable sources to this?

It's possible. On Alexa, it's ranked around the same as Slashdot which gets between 500,000-600,000 visits a day.

I can't understand it either. Adding up all the government secret agencies keeping track of political opinions wouldn't get close to 400k uniques/day... would it?

An average stay time of 3 seconds means that some people are staying for 1 second perhaps less. Sounds like swarms of bot visits but do they register as uniques ?

In blogging circles it's widely known as the most popular blog on the web. There is a ton of interest in political blogs, politics is a huge market which crosses over all kinds of interests and demographics.

Frankly speaking, we are talking about a blog. That means that those figures don't even include all the readers that are accessing the site via RSS, Atom and My Yahoo! feeds. Congrats to whoever the owner may be.

Its a very popular Liberal blog, depending on the topic and the blogs popularity, you can definitely make a lot of money. Last year I read that the site earned $100,000 in revenue.

Read this article, The blogger who makes $55K working 3 hours a day.

Instapundit another political blog earns $8,000 to $10,000 a month in ad revenue - 220,000 readership. Weblogs Inc. (Engadget, Autoblog, Joystiq, etc. also make a lot of money, they have 75 blogs in their network. So it can be done. Now who's ready to start one? I had a few ideas for some blogs, but I would like some partners to work with.

*wow* outstanding stuff, congratulation to whoever owns it/them.

I zipped through it briefly.. total information overload for me, they got my 3 seconds, but I doubt anything there would ever interest me again.

dailykos is a HUGELY popular site. Probably the #1 liberal site. Back durring elections it was all over the place, they wrote about it in Time magazine, newsweek, wall street journal, they've been on CNN. It gets redicoulous hits just from the 1000's of other liberal bloggers who link to stories of theirs.

That's the thing about blogs. You want something people will like, then links links links links links. Bloggers link to bloggers and it causes a massive chain reaction.

So, a potential success secret might be something like.. write a nice political blog on your site and get lots of links?

Do you think that would work for sites that weren't strictly blog sites?

If so, that's a neat one for the book.

Yeah. Who'd be interested in reading politics when there are so many interesting webmaster sites on the Net?

And that was 35k for 3 months.

Yeah, I believe it. Dailykos.com is HUGE! It's mentioned all the time on NPR and PBS.

    Politics are HUGE.
and for Dailykos not only does it get TONS of trackbacks but also gets linked all the time from sites like Michael Moore's site, Bill Marher, HuffintonRepot. and tons of others. site probably gets 100k hits a day just fron links alone. And it doesn't go a week without being talked about on major things like CNN, NPR, PBS, MSNBC, it's like the #1 place for undeground news. Actually I'm surprised it only gets that many hits. DrudgeReport gets around a million a day.

I link to dailyKos, I give them just from myself about 750 hits a day, and thats just from me. Then take in the other 50,000 sites that link to it.

How does SiteMeter or any other non-java stat tracker know how long you stayed on a page? By the difference in time between page views. Since this blog has all its recent posts in full right on the homepage, most visitors probably only read the one page. There's no way to determine the length of time the person stayed on the page if they don't view another, so it's set at some default, like 3 seconds. The average time might be 5 minutes for all we or SiteMeter know.
