    Optimizing Local Searches

Where does Google get their information for the local results returned at the top of the search page and how do we get included?

Your best bet would be to make sure you're listed in the Yellow/Blue pages because thats where they probably get their information from.

(Personally I think it's a combination of GIS data, Yellow/Blue pages and information aquired from Navteq). But unless you email them directly I'm not sure if there is any definitive place.

Even if you do get listed in the Yellow pages, you'll probably not be updated on google local for another 6-8 months.

Hmm, I'd be interested in seeing this too. I wonder if they would look at addresses on the contact page? Or at server location (that can't be it, most people don't house their own servers)?

I could be wrong and I used to think Google looked at the addresses on the website, but now I don't think so. This could be a huge deal for bricks and mortor type businesses.

Well, yeah, I think a .ca domain will rank better for canadian searches, though it has to be more than that. A lot of people use .com for typeins/branding, even if they're strictly Canadian -- therefore, Google has to look at more. It's only logical.

When all else fails - read the directions.... here is some info that I'm studying:
    http://www.google.com/help/faq_local.html#what

Also, apparently there is something called Google accounts which seems to be different than adsense or adwords, at least it appears to require a separate login. Anyone know more about this?

Looks like we may have to buy some listings in some of the "yellow pages" sites, but don't want to spend a lot of money - any ideas?
