can i steal the background colour from later on in the page?

i've been working on the a new menu for our site at work, which is at:
    http://www.voxpops.co.uk/test
the menu itself works well (ignore colours, they looked ok in photoshop colour picker, but not as whole pages) my prob is that where the rollover links appear, after they've gone i'm left with a white space - i could chagnge this colour, but it'll need to be a different colour depending on the page, so i was wondering if i could tell it to use the colour which is in the lower half of the table.

Also the white line caused by the table is also going to really annoy me, so if anyone knows how to get rid of that i'd be grateful for any help there too.
i've also tried a <div> version, but that had the same problems. although there was also sometimes overlap.

    Thanks

Remove the background color from the table and set the background color for the page instead.

Better yet, use CSS instead of tables. Tables were meant to display tabular data NOT layout a page.

Table free is the way to be!
