    Does Linux make you lazy??

I have been pondering over this for a while........

Here is my reasoning behind it.

Tab-Completion... In Linux I can start typing something and then hit the tab key and it finishes what I am typing (very helpful with long directories).

The up arrow. So I don't feel like typing in a long command again..... hit the up arrow and *pow* its there....

Then I come sit at a Windows box and all of the sudden I have to work

Anyone ever feel like this??? Or am I some weirdo who uses Linux just too much??

Windows does let you use the up arrow, but if you have an older version you might need to run doskey first. And there isn't tab completion, but you can do cd blah* which is more or less the same thing, or just use a gui.

Actually, command.exe does have tab completion. You need to enable it in TweakUI.

Most IRC clients have tab completion too, so it's sort of a standard thing to have when you need to type long or repetitive things.

BTW, if you have to do ANY work at all on the commandline in Windows, get Cygwin. It installs bash for you which is much nicer than command.txt or .html, whatever it is.

Anarchos got it right, it's cmd.exe

I must agree that Linux is so much better with working on the commandline than DOS, the best thing is that Linux uses slashes, while DOS/Windows uses backslashes, which take much more time to type than slashes.

I now dislike doing anything more than typing 'ping -c 10 xxx.xxx.xx.xxx' in a DOS box

ahh - tab completion. Thanks, I did not know, being a Linux newbie

Perhaps someone could start a thread in the Computer Help Desk forum where we could discuss useful tips and tricks to know for Linux. I'm sure other newbies as well as myself could pick up quite a few good tricks. Any takers?

Tab completion in linux is a God-send

However, a serious answer to your original question "Does Linux make you lazy??" would be a resounding "No". I'm probably preaching to the converted here but using Linux effectively requires quite a bit more thought and effort - and this is not a bad thing. One of the reasons that windows servers are statistically less secure than linux servers is that windows server admin tools can be used by anyone - if you can click your way througha wizard you can set up a windows server. This means that someone with virtually no computer knwledge (and no knowledge of security) can set up a windows box. Linux by its nature requires you to be slightly more clued up, and therefore more likely to read documentation / care about security.

yeah, i think linux makes me lazy.....

if i want to shut down, i don't have to move my mouse and click buttons....just type "halt" and hit enter....

other times it makes me work my but off (for instance....figuring out that i need these commands to set up my modem:

    setserial /dev/ttyS2 uart unknown
    isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf
    setserial /dev/ttyS2 uart 16550A irq 5

    )

That took me quite a few hours to figure out.....put it in the rc.sysinit though so it does it automatically...oh well, i've got cable now woohoo, autodetected it
