Does anyone actually run a site because they enjoy it ?

I do just wondered if there was anyone sites out there that is not focused on earning money, but provising quality information for their users

    I run http://www.wannabebig.com

Its been up for about 5 months and to date has earned ... erm... $0

I pay $26 a month in hosting to keep it up, bought a vbulletin license for my forums and they are my costs so far... I also probably spend 1/2 days a month sorting content and doing the updates (html yuk)

I see other sites smaller than mine trying to run about 10 affiliate schemes, sell sports supplements, personal traniing services clearly deperately trying to make money but the info on there is limited and well to be honest poor...

I actually have an exclusive sponsor for the month of July for $200 and if they like it they will continue to be the sponsor reguarly.. Again I won't keep any of this money I will use ti to fund competitions and pay my writers.. I dolt mind investing the money I like the idea of owning a site and a community and the respect it brings from my viewers.. I also like playing an editor role

Anyway I just wondered if I am alone auot here, it seems I am in my site topic anyway ..... I really attriute the success of my site compared to other failing bodybuildnig sites to keeping the main focus quality content rather than revenue earning..

I run my site (http://www.total-albion.com) for the love of my team, Brighton & Hove Albion FC - of course I'd like it to make a little money, but its not vitally important at this stage.

I use my site to try out new techniques and as a place where I can give away the source files for some of my Flash experiments.

    Not interested in money.

Yes!! The Postfive website makes no money at all....it's costing ME money as I paid for the webspace so that I could have the domain name 'attached' to it, if you know what I mean, rather than have it redirected to the free space that my isp gives me.

I love motorsport and as several here know already, my husband is a marshal. I initially started this site as a means of providing marshals with a way to contact the various racing clubs in order to marshal for them and to give smaller clubs a place to advertise if they need marshals, but I also wanted to raise awareness to the fact that these guys/gals are volunteers. Many assume they are paid to give up their weekends, but the truth of the matter is that they're lucky to be given a meal ticket! The fact that they don't get paid means that numbers are dwindling, so I'm now trying to come up with some ideas to attract new marshals.

I also want to try to help with raising awareness with regard to safety in motorsport. I'm putting plans into action now to try to get a company interested in providing me with Postfive sew-on patches that I can sell to marshals in aid of the Motor Racing Safety Fund. My husband has broached the subject with some of his marshalling friends, and the general concensus of opinion is that they will sell - fingers crossed

This is all going to take up some of my spare time, along with the time I already spend trying to keep the site up to date, but I figure that's nothing compared to what these marshals give.

T.A.D.I.-project is more like an hobby than a way to make money.

EmuDreams is a site I started because emulators are interesting.

I run both sites thus merely because I enjoy running them

They wave flags to warn/inform the racing drivers of stuff - like fast car behind or something, or they help extinguish fires and rescue drivers - I don't think you need that with your Oval tracks in the US though, do you?

Putting it briefly, as there's a hell of a lot more to it than this....

There are many types of marshals

Some are organisers in the paddock area (where the teams wait until their race). These marshals make sure that the teams are basically in the right place at the right time, along with a few other tasks.

You also have pitlane marshals. They're there for basic safety reasons. Make sure nobody is wandering the pitlane when cars are on track. Make sure people aren't smoking etc etc.

Then there are the guys out on track, who are seen the most by the public. They man the circuits at given points and cover many tasks from waving flags (a means of communicating with the drivers) to attending incidents on the track.

Keith's been marshalling for 8 years now, and it's through his love of motorsport that I've become addicted to it myself. I can't dedicate time to marshalling though, as I would have to arrange for somebody to look after my children practically every weekend, so I thought I'd do my bit by setting up this website.

I run www.gib-online.com because I love my country and I consider myself to be a cyber ambassador. The website costs me money to run but I don't care.

I know Angelina Jolie, I thought she was fabulous in Hackers.

And Marshalls doa superb job, we wouldn't have the same F! races we do now if it wasn't for the marshalls. I have been on a marshalling course because I want to be a marshall but you have to donate a lot of your time and it is quite expensive travelling to race tracks! Quite a few marshalls have died for the love of their sport, do you think that you would have the guts to help a driver when his car is on fire whilst 21 other F! cars drive past you at 200 miles and hour? Believe me, you do not realise how fast those cars are going until you have actually stood next to them in real life! I have had the privilege of standing in the pit lane when Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard have been practising pit stop and it is amazing!

MovieForums.com -- It's almost a dream of mine to make a decent amount of money off of such a site, but if I were assured today that, for example, I would only break even as long as it remained open, I still don't think I'd close it.

Chris - I hadn't seen those movie forums before.

I can understand why one would want to keep them running just for the love of it.

It's a project to create an extensive database of useful sources and references on the internet, including articles on research projects of the NASA, MIT and articles on various topics, like neural networks, robotics etc.
It'll also be the place where scripts and programs I create will be available if I decide to release them

I'm not yet finished with this site, but I expect to have it 'finished' within a few months.
