a possible middle ground would be to allow just about a maximum of a couple of links in the signature and restrict the signature to a maximum of one line.
Of course if a member wanted to change his signature and sort of "rotate" his links on a periodic basis thats not a problem ...

There are limitations as to how many lines and characters we are allowed in our sigs. I don't think the problem was the size of the sigs, rather right now SitePoint Forums is expierencing severe growing pains and they turn the sigs off to conserve server resources (e.g. fewer database calls).

Search engines have become quite aggressive over the past several months on indexing sites, and I imagine they are putting a tremendous load on this forum. Hopefully once SP migrates this forum to new hardware that is more robust, they will leave sigs turned on.

Agreed. I think 3 links is a reasonable maximum. There's no need to have the entire freakin' alphabet in your signature.

What happens if you don't have a "signature" and you write your signature and link url in the message box following your post?

Your not supposed to do that. Your only allowed to post URL's in your sig.

As stated above, we do not allow that here as we do not allow self promotion in posts. Signatures are the only places that links to websites you want to promote are allowed.

Added features are surely something that can be paid, such as being able to post more ads on 'Advertise Your Services'.

I couldn't care less about sigs, and as long as the basic values of SP remain, I stay! But paid memberships tend to create an elitistic group

mmj, try removing the users online list and online.php from the front page, that is more resource intensive than the sigs

I think we're receptive to the idea of providing premium forum services to people who pay a fee. The question is--and always has been--what premium features can we offer that people will find worthwhile?

We don't want to take away free features that our community has come to expect, and we don't want to establish a culture of "pays vs. pay-nots" elitism.

Well the way you avoid elitism is to not give them a badge! lol

Maybe Im missing something but I dont see how

A) Any feature in that list would take away from current users anything you havent already taken away
B) How it would lead to elitism.

You know what's funny is basically all we're doing is asking you to let us pay for all the features you've taken away in the past few weeks. Had they not been taken away the point of having paid members would never have come up. Brilliant!
