is there a tutorial around that teaches everything about the .HTAccess file? I searched at sitepoint but there is no article. I think this should be added it's somewhat important I think...

    Thanks

funny you should say that... I thought it would be good to add too and was thinking about writing a tutorial for it.

But in leiu of that if you told us exactly what you wanted to accomplish we could help you out...

unless you simply wanted to learn everything.

well...learning everything about .htaccess would be great and I wouldn't have to come here and wait hours/days before I can make this thing work. That's why I was searching for a good tutorial, but actually I am trying to make an .htaccess file work on a tera-byte account(raq) to prevent users from reading text files on a determined folder.

I have tried their page to password protect directories.
    http://taxi.tera-byte.com/htaccess/
It works, but if I hit CANCEL when I am prompted for username and password, and I hit my BACK button and then the FORWARD button I still can see the text file.

Also, when i upload the .htaccess and the .htpasswd files by FTP in ASCII they disappear. Is this normal?

shorter: I need to protect my text files

    Thanks

Indeed, as Paul S said it, using search engines to find answer to questions like this can provide results in no time.

For example, take a quick peek to Google and search for "htaccess", "htaccess tutorial" or "htaccess guide" and I'm sure that you will find more than enough of information about the topic at hand.

yes, In fact I always search on Google since it brings me great results about these topics.
However, for .htaccess I found only tutorials wich covers each a part of what can be made with .htaccess. Joining all these different tutorials may be difficult and confusing. So I was searching one that puts everything together. But if I can't find any like that, obviously I'll use those I found on google. I just thought you sitepoint abdicted could give me the right way to go

the reason these files are disappearing is that any file proceeded with a . in a *nix environment is a hidden file. You need to do ls -a to view all of them.

I use WS_FTP LE and want to be able to view my .htaccess file. What steps do I need to take in order to make it visible on my FTP proggie?

I believe WS_FTP allows you to execute *nix commands. There should be a little text box to type them into, simply type ls -a or ls -al

Alternatively there is usually a menu of commands if you right click on the screen.

I'm looking now and I just don't see where I could enter it in, I've right clicked and tried each of the FTP commands, but still nothing. Surely there's a way...

Open up WS_FTP, then select the site you wish to view everything (including hidden files). Next click on the "startup" tab in that window. Then go down to where it says "Remote File Mask". In that area type in (without quotes) "-al". That's an L by the way, not an I. Click OK, then connect. Everything should show up then, including .htaccess.
