    Problem starting MySQL

I just installed MySQL according to the instructions at:

    http://mysql.com/articles/ddws/5.html

When trying to start safe_mysqld, all I get is:

Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /usr/local/mysql/var 010610 18:32:46 mysqld ended

...then it goes back to the # prompt. When I try to run mysql, I get an error message:

Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (111)

I looked for this file, but it does not exist. Any idea what step I may have missed? I added a mysqlgrp group with a member mysqlusr. I ran the script to create the database. Any assistance would be appreciated.

The daemon is not starting, theres some kind of configuration problem I'm assuming. Thus when trying to launch mysql command line there is no daemon to connect to hence error message.
