HELP mysql: connection to server at 'localhost' failed

Please help me solve these problems. It has been a frustrating experience for me to get this mysql server up.

CASE I
this happenned right after I type
./mysqladmin -h disceez -u root -p password
after the initial installation.

./mysqladmin: connect to server at 'disceez' failed
error: Host 'disceez' is not allowed to connect to this MYSQL server

CASE II
this happenned right after I type
./mysqladmin -u root -p password
after the initial installation.

./mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: Access denied for user: 'root@localhost'

i had the same problem. I tried to insert a new username and password and it never worked. You aren't obliged to insert a username and password before you can view and edit your databases from mysql( That was what happen to me, i dunno if your's the same, i could access my databases directly). U can directly access your databases, try to type

Show databases;

and then, to use a database, type

use "databasename";

If you feel not secure, or working on another guy's pc, i would suggest you to put a username and password.
