I haven't had much experience with designing custom fonts, but keeping the letters simple comes to mind.

Start from studying the classic designs. Arial/Swiss, Times, Helvetica, Futura, etc.
Plain and typical? Maybe, but they work fine in so many situations.
These are the ABCs to learn from.

Designing the fonts is a very complex task - not only You have the glyphs to draw, but also properly set the kerning for example (which is a very important thing).

As varelse has pointed out, it is imperative that you get the kerning just right.

Be aware that, if you are going to use this fonts in a website, not everybody will be able to display them. When you design a website you depend on the fonts installed on that computer, else you have to use an @import rule so that the browser downloads that font, but some browsers (ok, ok, I will say it... IE) does not support the @import rule, therefore, it will not download it.

    Lightbulb I recommend

I agree with molona and keep to the standard fonts. If you don't older or other browsers may not be able to see them or your website will mess up. If you want different fonts you may want to make an image of it and use that if you want.

I guess he wanted to design fonts not for web use only...
There are many other ways they can be used
    Good luck, Kevin!
