Help! No Sound!

My computer isn't playing any sounds...NONE AT ALL...and it isn't even on mute.

Does anybody know what the problem could be? It played just fine yesterday.

Have you done any of the following

1. Moved your PC

Check that your sound card is still seated properly in the motherboard

2. Installed new hardware

Check under device manager for conflicts with the new hardware

If you havent done any of the above, check the obvious if you havent already

1. Do a full cold reboot
2. speakers are still plugged in properly
3. check you can still see the sound card under device manager.

What type of card is it? And what OS are you running?

micmar summed up pretty much everything I said. Other things you can do after you have done micimar's suggestions:

- Try other speakers
- Try another soundcard
- Try another soundcard and other speakers

Also, have you installed new drivers for the soundcard?

are you having trouble playing sounds from the cd drive or all sounds?

if it's just sounds from the cd drive that you can't hear (ie playing a music cd), then make sure that audio cable in the back of the cd drive is connected to the sound card.

Sorry for not posting it in there - I completely forgot about it!

The sounds go off and on, but they went back on, and now it's just part of AIM that's not doing the sounds.

My AIM sounds don't work either but, that is because they are turned off in the prefrences. Make sure your prefrences aren't set to turn off sounds completely. That might be the problem with AIM. What kind of computer are you using?

Its strange how you are getting sound in some programs but not others. Please tell us what soundcard you are using so we can help you further. I need more info to be anymore helpful.

I know nothing about the insides of computers...I just know how to work them

I have an IBM Aptiva E Series 245, and that's all I know.

Don't worry about it...I'll be fine, it's been doing this for a while now.
