Are there any tricks for submitting to Yahoo!?

I know many people have been turned down and lost $199 when submitting to the Yahoo! directory... are there any special tricks (after having site that works in all browsers)? I was thinking maybe a Yahoo! search button would help... but I don't know, anyone have any special tricks to get in and then listed high?

First, you must pray.

After that:

* Make sure you pick the right category. The ABSOLUTE right category. And make sure you're not already in the directory

* No "under construction" pages, lousy design or anything else that would make it look like a shoddy/personal home page.

* Make sure you have unique content/offer a service. A link list won't do..

Then you're pretty much set.

I submitted three sites to Yahoo last week, not expecting much luck. One site, which happens to be my own, was listed within a couple of days. Who knows if the others will make it, probably not. All three sites were set up using frontpage templates.

There arent really any tricks, but Yahoo is very strict with their guidelines. If you follow their rules to a 'T' then you should not have any problems getting in. I just submitted 3 sites last week and they all got indexed. Most importantly, have no dead links or under construction pages and make sure you have unique content (i.e. no redirections or copy sites).

I submitted to yahoo last month and didn´t get listed. (It is easy to spend $200) The reason was that I used layers that don´t support Netscape.

I have a question to both moospot and Helen:
Did you pay to get included or did you submit your sites for free?

I paid the fee because I was submitting e-commerce sites. They wont look at business sites unless you pay.

You have to find the right category level. Try moving up or down a level 'til it works. I find that annoying too.

I tried various categories, moved down to the very bottom and still nothing. I mean I own a commercial gallery, so I should really be able to be listed with all the rest of commercial galleries. Maybe something is not working properly at the moment?

I tried clicking the "Suggest a Site" link from dozens of categories (even third-level categories), and you are just brought to a "How-To Submit" guide. No links to a submission page, no way to submit at all.

Does anyone know what's wrong with Yahoo!?

I had submitted my site several times, and after not getting in several times, I finally wrote to them (there's an email address buried somewhere within the submission pages).

I BRIEFLY explained why my site should be in that category, that there was nothing like it listed, and it served a purpose to their visitors. I got in two days later.

This 'write to them' tip was one that I read on another message board, and thought I'd give it a try.

I just remembered something...

That email addy is buried in the FAQ pages in the submission section....In the area of 'What to do if you are not accepted for listing' (or something like that.) You really have to read for it...near the end, they give an email address.

BTW, what's ODP?

ODP is open directory project - it can be found at DMOZ.org and it is a free directory (like looksmart or yahoo but free and run by volunteers) that is used by many large search engines.

Not all... but quite a few smaller directories and sites are powered by DMOZ, so getting in that would certaintly help you get in many others. Same with getting in Yahoo!.

Gosh I feel silly for not knowing what that stood for...

Here goes another silly question.

Which large engines use ODP? I'm looking for a cheaper marketing alternative once Goto goes up to 5 cents.

Here's another Yahoo trick that will cost you some money, but certainly less than $200.

The visitors to one of my sites are VERY loyal, and LOVE anything with my site name on it.

I went to Yahoo and set up two "official" webrings with my site name in them (ie The official Weight Loss Journals of SoulCysters.com, the other ring had a different topic, but it still had my site name in it.)

Then on my site, I announced that the first 3 people who built a site and joined the ring would get a coffee mug with my site logo on it (I had the mugs created at cafepress.com for $10 a piece)

There was a mad rush to get the sites built and in the ring, and now my rings are the largest in the category. PLUS, everyone linked back to me.

If I wasn't already in Yahoo, I would write them and point this out to them - that my rings are the largest.

Just a thought.

Unexpected bonus...My site traffic increased 12% within 2 weeks from the webrings...

Many large sites use ODP because the data is free to use. One of the biggest sites I can think of that uses them is The Google Directory. You can find a (big) list of sites that use ODP data @ http://dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/S...sing_ODP_Data/

I just got listed in Yahoo!. Ever since Yahoo! had some downtime, not accepting submissions at all, it seems that it is easier to get listed.

I submitted about 1-2 weeks ago, and I'm listed.
