    Song lyrics

This is sort of a favorite song thread, but I want to focus on the lyrics themselves. There are certain songs that I can listen to and almost come to tears because the lyrics are so beautiful and poetic. Then there are the songs where the combination of the lyrics AND music together DO bring me to tears.

These two songs fit in that category. It's by a band called Mineral (RIP). Their music is not for everyone, they would classified as an "emo" band which generally means they go more for raw emotion than musical accuracy and his voice is one of those that you either love or hate, but I think it's perfect for their music. If you're interested, I could post snippets of the song in MP3 format.

    If I Could

She stepped outside into the morning air
To watch the cars go by and let the sun dry her hair
I wanted to tell her how beautiful she was
    But I just stared

I sat behind the wheel and watched the raindrops
As they gathered on the windshield
And raced down into the humming motor
And she folded up her fears like paper airplanes
And lost them in the trees

    And I know I don't deserve this
    The capacity to feel
To laugh and cry and to praise
For that I live and breathe and wake each day
Is nothing less than your grace
    In awkward and glorious movement

and here is one more by the same group...just gorgeous.

    Unfinished

I wish you could put your ear up to my heart
And hear how much I love you

    I still dream of December
Dancing together with rings on our fingers

    And the two shall become

The old folk of today simply dont know what good lyrics are

My favourite lyrics from songs, atleast at the moment...dont slam me for it is just an opinion!!!

Cypress Hill (hits from the bong):
Put the bud down just for a second dont get me wrong its not a new habit.
Inhale, exhale, i just got an ounce in the mail.

    Limp Bizkit (n 2 gether):
Shut the fu** up, and take that sh** back, cause all your sh**s wacked when its laid out like that!

    Good Charlotte (the little things):
This song is dedicated to every kid who got picked last in gym class, to every kid who never had no date to no school ball, to everyone whos ever been called a freak this is for you!

    BlindSpot (nill by mouth):
Stop stare what the fu** you dont know me, stop and stare what the fu** you dont own me..

I think youth (like myself) like that kind of music because it sortof reflects life as it is!

I also like these songs for their lyrics/music combo but i cant remember the lyrics accurately.
    Tool - stinkfist
    Taproot - again and again
    Linkin Park - crawling

In terms of lyrics Linkin Park are extra good. Unlike a lot of heavy rock lyrics they're actually well thought out and mean something.

Limp Bizkit does seem to do an excessive amount of swearing doesn't he? In some of the songs it works, in other's it's out of place. I do like My Way or the Highway though, cool song and Significant Other is a good album.

Another band I love for their lyrics is Placebo. Let's see if I can remember some of them:

    Placebo - 36 Degrees

We were tight, but it falls apart as silver turns to blue.
Waxing with a candlelight, and burning just for you.
Allocate your sentiment, and stick it in a box.
I've never been an extrovert, but I'm still breathing.

Someone tried to do me ache (it's what I'm afraid of)

With hindsight, I was more than blind, lost without a clue.
Thought I was getting carat gold, and what I got was you.
Stuck inside the circumstances, lonely at the top.
    I've always been an introvert
    happily bleeding.

Someone tried to do me ache (it's what I'm afraid of)

    4 7 2 3 9 8 5 - I gotta breathe to stay alive,
    and 1 4 2 9 7 8 - feels like I'm gonna suffocate.
14 16 22 - this skin that turns to blister blue.
Shoulders toes and knees, I'm 36 degrees,
shoulders toes and knees,I'm 36 degrees,
shoulder toes and knees, I'm 36 degrees,
shoulders toes and knees, I'm 36 degrees.
I dunno why, but they're ace. Abstract, meaningful or meaningless depending how you look at them. I may post some more after the meeting i'm going into now

<sigh> The difference between the 'young' and the 'not so young' (well, I refuse to describe myself as old! ) </sigh>

I have way too many favourite songs to even begin to think about listing the lyrics.

There's an Irish group called The Corrs who I like very much and find many of their lyrics emotionally stirring.

One of my favourites is Only When I Sleep from the Talk On Corners album.

You're only just a dream boat
    Sailing in my head
    You swim my secret oceans
    Of coral blue and red
    Your smell is incense burning
    Your touch is silken yet
    It reaches through my skin
    Moving from within
    And clutches at my breast

But it's only when I sleep
    See you in my dreams
Got me spinning round and round
    Turning upside down
But I only hear you breathe
    Somewhere in my sleep
Got me spinning round and round
    Turning upside down
But it's only when I sleep

And when I wake from slumber
    Your shadow's disappeared
Your breath is just a sea mist
    Surrounding my body
    I'm working through the daytime
But when it's time to rest
    I'm lying in my bed
    Listening to my breath
    Falling from the edge
But it's only when I sleep

    It's reaching through my skin
    Moving from within
    And clutches at my breast
But it's only when I sleep....

Don't worry saz! I've got both the Corrs latest albums. They're a fantastic band. Queen of Hollywood is my favourite Corrs song of all time, I've even been known to sing it in the shower. Eek! I'm late

I wont buy any album (or like/listen to) and artist that self obsessed with making money, such as the corrs - I will only like them if they arnt against Napster et al

Although I cant remember the lyrics off hand, anything by Fatboy Slim (Norman Cook)* or Phats and Small get me dancing

Plus any chart music, dance or trance.

Linkin Park? Limp Bizkit? Eugh - trashy screaming crap IMO.

(*I do actually like Fatboy Slim, and its not just cos his record company, Skint, sponsors the Albion, although I will buy his stuff purely cos its a Skint record!)

I think the record companies were more to do with the death of Napster than the artists themselves. I know it was cool to download songs rather than buy them but lets face it, it was kind of breaking the law and was bound to go in the end Anyway, we can save that for another thread. I personally like / listen to an artist based on the music they produce, not on what they do outside of a recording studio.

Does dance or trance have that many lyrics? There's a band called Lange who release euphoric trance tracks. The few lyrics in those are really moving. The two i've got on CD single are I Believe and Follow Me. Follow Me I just LOVE. Dumonde are also a good euphoric trance band but not too widely known.

    Lange - Follow Me
    Follow me, to the end,
And follow me into the dream,
And dance with me, into the star fire
Like tonight is all there is,
And make a leap of faith, and don't look down.
    Follow Me.... to the end.
    Fantastic

Yeah, most of it does, its the trancy stuff with lyrics i like best, like Aurora - Ordinary World.

I like a lot of the Vs stuff too - I heard a brilliant choon the other day - Big Brother theme (UK, andy okenfold) vs Madison Avenue - Who the hell are you. It was a fantastic mix.

I agree that the combination of Lyrics/Music makes a song good or bad, and in the aspect of bringing someone to tears, there are songs which have done it to me. One of them is an Israeli song about the "Yom Kippur War", but thats something I personally relate to. Another one would be Savage Gardan's "Truly, Madly, Deeply"

    I'll be your dream,
I'll be your wish I'll be your fantasy.
    I'll be your hope,
I'll be your love be everything that you need.
I love you more with every breath truly madly deeply do..
I will be strong I will be faithful
    'cause I'm counting on

    A new beginning.
    A reason for living.
    A deeper meaning.

I want to stand with you on a mountain.
I want to bathe with you in the sea.
I want to lay like this forever.
til the sky falls down on me...

And when the stars are shining brightly in the velvet sky,
I'll make a wish send it to heaven then make you want to cry..
The tears of joy for all the pleasure and the certainty.
That we're surrounded by the comfort and protection of..
The highest power. In lonely hours. The tears devour you..

I want to stand with you on a mountain,
I want to bathe with you in the sea.
I want to lay like this forever,
Until the sky falls down on me...

Oh can't you see it baby?
You don't have to close your eyes
'cause it's standing right before you.
All that you need will surely come...

    I'll be your dream
I'll be your wish I'll be your fantasy.
    I'll be your hope
I'll be your love be everything that you need.
I'll love you more with every breath truly madly deeply do...

I want to stand with you on a mountain,
I want to bathe with you in the sea.
I want to lay like this forever,
Until the sky falls down on me...
In terms of good songs with a good music/lyrics combination, I put Green Day's "Time of Your Life" at the top.

Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road.
Time grabs you by the wrist, directs you where to do.
So make the best of this test, and don't ask why.
It's not a question, but a lesson learned in time.

It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right.
I hope you had the time of your life.

So take the photographs, and still frames in your mind.
Hang it on a shelf of good health and good time.
Tattoos of memories and dead skin on trial.
For what it's worth, it was worth all the while.

It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right.
I hope you had the time of your life.
The amazing combination of wonderful lyrics, and good music by Billie Joe and his vocal's make it one of the best songs and it deserved all the air it got on various TV shows (Seinfelds last episode, 2 appearances on ER, and many many more).

I apologise for posting this song in its entirety but it pretty sums up everything for me at the moment.

    Limp Bizkit - The one.

    Dead from all the loneliness
And this is how I feel
Understanding everything has never been my deal
Maybe you have crossed my path
    To live inside of me
Or maybe you're the reason why
    I'm losing all my decency

Cause I believe that you and me
    We could be so...
    Happy and free
    Inside a world of misery
And I believe that you and me
    We could be so...
Inside of you, inside of me
Cause this could be the one

    This could be the one

    I've been lookin'
I've been lookin' for my Mrs Right
    But she don't exist
    Chemistry is everything
    And we're anything but this
Maybe I have crossed your path
And swept you off your feet
Or maybe I'm the reason why you cry at night
    Before you sleep

Cause I believe that you and me
    We could be so...
    Happy and free
    Inside a world of misery
And I believe that you and me
    We could be so...
Inside of you, inside of me
Cause this could be the one

    This could be the one

    But what do you think?
We could give it a try
    Cause you never know
Maybe we could be soul mates
    But maybe not (maybe not)
    But maybe so (maybe so)
    If you never try
    Then you'll never know
The grass could be greener (could be)
And it will always be greener on the other side
But you.. just never (never) know
    This could be the one

I do believe that you and me
    We could be so...
    Happy and free
    Inside a world of misery
And I believe that you and me
    We could be so...
Inside of you, inside of me
Cause this could be the one

    This could be the one

    But maybe so (maybe so)
    But maybe not (maybe not)
    Who knows?

    If you're alone
    I know I...
    If you can hide
    Then go hide
    Away
But I want you to stay, hey
    And blow me away, away
    I want you to stay
    And blow me away
    Away
    If you're alone
    Don't you vry
    If you can hide
    Then go hide
    Away
    I want you to stay
    And blow me away
    Your way
    I want you to stay
    And blow me away
    Away
    Your way

I will admit that I know virtually nothing about Cypress Hill, but I would not really consider their lyrics to be emotionally stirring. "Insane in the Membrane"? Very poetic... . To each his own of course though.

I read an article about Linkin Park in RS mag. I was very impressed on their stand against profanity in their music.

    They don't use any.

Now their speech on the other hand is full of profanity but that is another story. I totally respect and support their choice to avoid the use of profanity in their lyrics. I personally see absolutely no need to say the F word in a song, especially like some rap songs that use it twice in every sentence. To me that merely shows a lack of intelligence and creativity.

I wish more artists would take a stand like that. I think the quality of music would improve 100 fold.

Bring them on, more lyrics right here...

This is from Weezer's In the Garage

    In the garage
    I feel safe
No one cares about my ways
    In the garage
    Where I belong
No one hears me sing this song
    In the garage
    In the garage

and here's a little ditty from Primus

    Mr. Knowitall

    They call me Mr. Knowitall
    I will not compromise.
I will not be told what to do.
    I shall not step aside.
    They call me Mr. Knowitall
I have no time to waste.
My mouth it spews pure intellect.
    And I've such elegant taste.
    They call me Mr. Knowitall.
    I sup the aged wine.
Oh I could tell such wonderous tales
if I should find the time.
    I must be Mr. Knowitall
For ideas they come in bounds.
    I am Mr. Knowitall
    So spread the word around.
    They call me Mr. Knowitall
    I am so eloquent.
    Perfection is my middle name
    And whatever rhymes with eloquent.

and one last one from one of my favorite bands ever, Pedro the Lion. This is one of the most poignant songs I think I have ever read. So full of honesty that it nearly breaks my heart:

    secret of the easy yoke

i could hear the church bells ringing
    they peeled aloud your praise
    the member's faces were smiling
with their hands outstretched to shake
it's true they did not move me
my heart was hard and tired
    the perfect fire annoyed me
i could not find you anywhere
could someone please tell me the story
of sinners ransomed from the fall
i still have never seen you, and somedays
i don't love you at all

    the devoted were wearing bracelets
to remind them of why they came
    some concrete motivation
and the abstract could not do the same
but if all that's left is duty, i'm falling on my sword
at least then, i would not serve an unseen distant lord

could someone please tell me story
of sinners ransomed from the fall
i still have never seen you, and somedays
i don't love you at all
    if this only a test
i hope that i'm passing, cuz i'm losing the stake
but i still want to trust you

awwww, Creole you're cheating by leaving off lyrics:

    Insane in the Membrane
    in..sane...in the brain...

Now, come on, tell me it's not poetry...

Linkin Park do have some very deep lyrics, crawling is an awesome song...
"crawling in my skin, these wounds they will not heal. Fear is how i fall, confusing what is real" ... think thats it!

As for not buying bands because they dont like Napster i cant say i agree. I like bands because of their music, nothing more nothing less...it doesnt matter what they say, do, wear, etc aslong as their music is good.
I use IMesh often to download video clips and the odd mp3 but i also buy a decent number of cd's and the stuff i download i wouldnt pay much money for anyway..

Creole, swear words do go well in alot of songs. But i dont have time to argue that....gotta go to school!.

Heres another good song I've been listening to lately:

    Craig David - Walking Away

I'm walking away from the troubles in my life
I'm walking away oh to find a better day
I'm walking away from the troubles in my life
I'm walking away oh to find a better day
    I'm walking away

sometimes some people get me wrong
when it's something I've said or done
sometimes you feel there is no fun
that's why you turn and run
    but now I truly realise
    some people don't wanna cpomromise
well I saw them with my own eyes spreading those lies
and well I don't wanna live my life too many sleepless nights
not mentioning the fights i'm sorry to say lady

I'm walking away from the troubles in my life
I'm walking away oh to find a better day
I'm walking away from the troubles in my life
I'm walking away oh to find a better day
    I'm walking away

    Well I'm so tired baby
things you say you're driving me away
whispers in the powder room baby
don't listen to the games they play
    girl I thought you'd realise
I'm not like them other guys
coz I saw them with my own eyes
    you should've been more wise
and well I don't wanna live my life too many sleepless nights
not mentioning the fights I'm sorry to say lady

I'm walking away from the troubles in my life
I'm walking away oh to find a better day
I'm walking away from the troubles in my life
I'm walking away oh to find a better day
    I'm walking away
Swearing can be good for songs, does it really matter?

    Craig David............now we're talking!!!

And David Gray - especially the track Sail Away from his White Ladder album. The lyrics on their own don't sound THAT inspiring - you have to listen to it to appreciate it really.

    Sail away with me honey
I put my heart in your hands
Sail away with me honey now, now, now
    Sail away with me
    What will be will be
    I wanna hold you now

Crazy skies all wild above me now
    Winter howling at my face
And everything I held so dear
    Disappeared without a trace
Of all the times I've tasted love
Never knew quite what I had
Little darling if you hear me now
    Never needed you so bad
    Spinning round inside my head

    Sail away with me honey
I put my heart in your hands
Sail away with me honey now, now, now
    Sail away with me
    What will be will be
    I wanna hold you now

    I've been talking drunken gibberish
Falling in and out the bars
Trying to find some explanation here
For the way some people are
How did it ever come so far

    Sail away with me honey
I put my heart in your hands
Sail away with me honey now, now, now
    Sail away with me
    What will be will be
    I wanna hold you now
    (repeat)

Craig David has an amazing voice and walking away is a great song. Some lyrics that get to me are....

Pearl Jam - elderly woman behind the counter in a small town

I seem to recognize your face
Haunting, familiar, yet I can't seem to place it
Cannot find the candle of thought to light your name
Lifetimes are catching up with me
All these changes taking place, I wish I'd seen the place
But no one's ever taken me
Hearts and thoughts they fade, fade away...

I swear I recognize your breath
Memories like fingerprints are slowly raising
Me, you wouldn't recall, for I'm not my former
It's hard when, your stuck upon the shelf
I changed by not changing at all, small town predicts my fate
Perhaps that's what no one wants to see
    I just want to scream...hello...
My god its been so long, never dreamed you'd return
But now here you are, and here I am
    Hearts and thoughts they fade...away...

    Foo Fighters - Everlong

Breathe out, so I can breathe you in,
Hold you in, and now, I know you've always been.
Out of your head, out of my head I sing.

And I wonder when I sing along with you,
If everything could ever be this real forever.
If anything could ever be this good again,
The only thing I'll ever ask of you.
You gotta promise not to stop when I say when.

    Foo Fighters - Monkey wrench

One last thing before I quit,
I never wanted any more than
I could fit into my head,
I still remember every single word you said,
And all the **** that somehow came along with it,
Still there's one thing that comforts me,
Since I was always caged and now I'm freeeeeeeeeeee!

Lastly, John Lennon's - imagine. All i can say is ...wow.

Here's one i wrote. I'm working on getting a recorded version of it so I guess I'll upload it sometime if y'all wanna hear it. Most of my music is punk rock but I wanted to pose off The Ataris and have one slow, rock-type, song.

    Discrepancy

it's almost like being star-crossed lovers
though we're in love we can't be with each other

i think about you night and day
and all the things i'd like to say
waiting for the day they release this ban
i hope one day i'll get to see you again

    i don't understand why they're so stereotypical
not all guys are like that though it seems unbelievable

i think about you night and day
and all the things i'd like to say
waiting for the day they release this ban
i hope one day i'll get to see you again

somehow we will have to make them see
that me and you were always meant to be

i think about you night and day
and all the things i'd like to say
waiting for the day they release this ban
i hope one day i'll get to see you again

Nirvana - Something In The Way

    Underneath a bridge
My tarp has sprung a leak
    And the animals caught
    Have all become my pets
    And I'm living off grass
And the drippings from the ceiling
It's ok to eat fish cause they don't have any feelings

Something in the way... ohhh ya...
    Something in the way ya.....
Bread - Finish What You've Begun

    You have taken the heart
And left just a part of me
And look, look, look what you've done
Well you've took all the best me
So come get the rest of me
And look, back, finish what you've begun

There is someone you want meet
    It's me Mr. Incomplete
And look, look, look what you've done
Well it's due to the lack of you
That I'm now only half of two
And look, back, finish what you've begun

Come and sit by my side
    Where there's nothing to hide
And we'll try to decide what you needed
    From where I stand today
I can't think of way that I might the words to tell you
    I pleaded.
Look, Look, Look what you've done.

    Blink 182 - 'Anthem'

    Home show, mom won't know
    Run out the back door
He's passed out on the floor
    Third time, been caught twice
    Forgive our neighbor Bob
I think he humped the dog

But good things come to those who wait
    Cause she laid me
And mom and dad posses the key, instant slavery
No need to explain the plan no need to even bother
I'll pack my bags I swear I'll run, wish my friends were 21

    White lies, bloodshot eyes
Breath of alcohol, stole it from the mall
    How's Chris marked with lipstick
Better call their fathers, sleeping with your daughters

But good thing come to those who wait
    Cause she laid me
And mom and dad possess the key, instant slavery
No need to explain the plan no need to even bother
I'll pack my bags I swear I'll run, wish my friends were 21

You don't belong, you left the kids carry on
    You planned their fall
To bad you're wrong, don't need a mom dad slave drive song
    I time bomb

Turn low the radio, I think I hear my dad
    Yelling at the band

But good things come to those who wait
    Cause she laid me
And mom and dad posses the key, instant slavery
No need to explain the plan no need to even bother
I'll pack my bags I swear I'll run, wish my friends were 21

You don't belong, you left the kids carry on
    You planned their fall
To bad you're wrong, don't need a mom dad slave drive song
    I time bomb
    Coldplay - 'Yellow'

    Look at the stars,
Look how they shine for you,
    And everything you do,
    Yeah, they were all Yellow.

    I came along,
I wrote a song for you,
And all the things you do,
    And it was called Yellow.

So then I took my turn,
Oh what a thing to have done,
    And it was all Yellow.

    Your skin
Oh yeah, your skin and bones,
    Turn into something beautiful,
You know, you know I love you so,
You know I love you so.

    I swam across,
    I jumped across for you,
Oh what a thing to do.
    Cos you were all Yellow,

    I drew a line,
I drew a line for you,
Oh what a thing to do,
    And it was all Yellow.

    Your skin,
Oh yeah your skin and bones,
    Turn into something beautiful,
    And you know,
For you I'd bleed myself dry,
For you I'd bleed myself dry.

    It's true,
Look how they shine for you,

    Look at the stars,
Look how they shine for you,
And all the things that you do.
