How do I conquer promotion and SEO for this one??
Unlike many here, my blog is not related to traffic tips, SEO, or technical advice. Considering the content, how would you choose to promote?
Am I better off to just buy traffic via advertising?
TIA for any advice offered.

I'd start by finding other blogs about dogs and commenting on them. But that would be after conducting the necessary keyword research for dog blogs.

The answer to that one depends on your goals. If you want traffic quickly and with minimal effort then advertising might be the way to go.
If you're prepared to put the work in and wait for the traffic then commenting on blogs and participating in forums is a cheaper way to go.

If you have some budget on that, and ready to take the risk, go on. Everyone has different method of promoting their site.

advertising and directory listing will be an effective way but spending cost...
cheap and free one, blogging, forum posting, articles, blog posting comment, social bookmarking, and free directory listing...
But when you write or post comment or forum reply... just ensure it is helpful and quality one to gain credibilityGabrielle

Also, you can join some dog related forums. Write some useful tips for dogs and promote it on your blog...

Link to sites that are similar to your topic, sites at the same niche
Animals, nature, dog forums and blogs would greatly help you to increase site ranking and traffic.

don't buy traffic cause they wouldn't give you that much of ROI. I have a different blog as well to SEO and other related niche but i still get some good traffic by promoting it well and working my keywords to get good SERP.

It doesn't matter what kind of content you have, you advertise it, promote it the same way: You go where the kind of people who may like your site go to.
And, yes, if you want A LOT of people, you have to advertise, so....

You should do some SEO for your site.
Make sure you have the right links into your site to establish credibility in the eyes of Google, and then work on optimizing your onpage stuff.
