Define Self Promotion

OK, so let me see if I have this straight (REALLLLLLLL SLOW TODAY - almost brain dead)

If a person has a coding problem and I say "look at the code on my design site and tell me if that helps" Is OK? YES? HMMM?

I can also think of a post or two in the past in the Java section where someone asked for Java hosting services (of which I have one) ... and I said "Check my Siggie" ..... Not OK? Yes? HMMM?

OK, Ill go back to vegitating now.

Well, I think self promotion for commercial use shouldn't be be allowed, but when it isn't money-related it's all the same. My blog doesn't have ads on it, and it never will (it did last week as a test, but it won't ever again). I don't expect or intend to make money off of it, and I don't actually care if people read it or not. I just want to get the message across.

When there's a financial reason behind self promotion, that's another story -- at least, in my opinion.

Summary: Any post with a link to a site I do not own is considered self-promotion. In addition, the answer is mostly wrong and the explanation is flawed.

Technically what I posted is true and final

. We aren't always anal about it, though. We usually are looking for people who routinely go around and "refer to their sig" to get visitors.

DC, that is usually left up to the specific forum moderators... we're not trying to hav a double standard at all, but some forums employ touger than normal guidelines to reduce the vast number of spam posts. In Hosting, for example, refering to your company in any way that commercial (your exmple would qualify) would get that post deleted, an perhaps yourself banned if there were enough of those posts.

But hey, when in doubt, ask

There's a difference between saying "Don't use short tags" and "See my sig"

Now both of those together, you may be walking a fine line

If you've managed to stay unbanned for 5000 posts, though, you're probably safe

The post in question was in the Java section, not hosting. Its tough to find hosting for server-side java and the person basically asked "Anyone know a good Java hosting service" .... see my dilema there?

THis many posts about Self Promotion!

Ok basically the rules are:

1. you can post to your site/content etc in your sig and as long as the link is not misinformaing you (outwar and pimp links) then that is ok

2. if the answer to a question is on your site you CANNOT link to it on its own, you need to write the answer in the thread and then and only then if the article is too long or too detailed for that post you can place a link to - fill information can be found here.

(explanation - basically SP wants people to find everything they at this site therefore when a new users searches and find the answer to a question he doesn't want a link to a site that maybe isn't there BUT if you have the answer in the thread then hey presto its answered and they can follow a link for more information IF THEY CHOOSE TO)

DC - why can't you copy and paste a section from your code and post that and explain why? personally I hate people saying yeah I know the answer but you nede to go to me site to find it out

You are not meaning that but that is what you are doing.

I would rather you gave as much information in a thread as possible.

3. please do not EVER say "see my sign for more information" that I see is self-promotion and will remove a post with that in it, especially if that is what the whole posts is about!

AND hey if the answer you are giving is that worthy then submit the article to SP

I know some might think we are anal about it but we are trying to give users as much information in one place as possible - cos hey come on if we didn't you would just goggle for the answer instead of coming to SP cos it woudl be everywhere!
