    Linux directories?

I am starting to mess around with Linux and I need to know a little about where I should install stuff. For example, on Windows, you usually have C:\Windows(or C:\Winnt) which is ususally the system directory. C:\Program Files is where most of the programs are kept. Then I can create any sub-directories on C:\ without affecting the system.

What about linux, what are the directories that I should avoid creating files/directories in? Where is it recommended that my files and program be kept? (like /home/isuru/bin)

Can anyone give me a general idea?

    Thanks

I put all of my programming stuff (Perl, Python, PHP, Apache, etc.) in /usr/bin/ you must be root to do this. Other than that everything else you run can be put anywhere in your home directory.
