    AOL 7.0 Alpha leaked

A few people got a quick look at AOL 7.0 in an alpha version that was leaked to the Internet last week.

Overall the software didn't add any visible new features but did offer some interface enhancements to the now overcrowded Welcome screen and a few other screens.

The most touted new feature that was supposed to be in the software was missing from action though. This feature, codename "Komodo", is a browser interface engine that will allow AOL members to choose an alternative browser if they don't want to use the Internet Explorer default.

Currently the only Alternative browsers that would be supported by Komodo is Netscape 6 and other Mozilla derivatives. Other browsers simply do not have the modular architecture and don't expose their engine properly for this to work.

This doesn't surprise me. A lot of things are leaked out on the net and once it's out there, you can't stop it. I'm just hoping 7.0 is less cluttered and bulky than 6.0, not that I'd use it or anything, but I have to use it sometimes as my relatives I help use it.

I think their name choice for the browser-switching feature is not exactly the best choice. Komodo is also the name of ActiveState's Mozilla-based IDE, which could lead to some interesting trademark lawsuits.

Komodo is also the name of a monitor company and a large lizard.

I wish that were the case. It seems with every new version of any software, rather than try to improve speed, they add more and more "features" that none of us really asked for. I don't suspect that AOL will be any different.

What an interesting play on words:

"Monitor (lizard), or goannas, common name for a genus of lizards that includes the largest living lizard, the Komodo dragon."

With new versions of software I'm always looking for new features. Why else would I download it, or even buy it? Spend another $50 for a new version of Diablo with no new features, yeh right!
