google suggest tool - anyone figured it out yet?

Im thinking about mimicking the Google suggest tool on a webapp Im creating using my local dbs. I have all the XMLHttpRequest stuff done but am having a HECK of a time with the way they drop down the suggestions and then allow a user to pick one.

Ive grabbed all their js code and OH MAN is it UGLY ... I cant make heads or tails out of it. Does anyone know of, or have you seen an easier (or clearer) way of mimicking this effect! Id really like to see some code if anyone knows where to find it!
