I redid the reshack thing and double checked the files. The modification has been made in the dll.mod - Icon Group 195 is gone - but the timestamp is still 2004!!

Good to know it wasn't just my lack of expertise. Should I delete the .dll.org file?

So are we calling it a night? I'm pretty beat and am having work done on the porch early tomorrow. In fact, I probably won't be able to get back to this till late afternoon tomorrow. Baaawaaa!!!

    I'm wiped too.

About now I'm ALMOST thinking I should just put out the $25 for the PS Tray Factory and forget trying to do this mod.

But this has gone so far, it's a matter of NOT ACCEPTING DEFEAT and I don't think you will either DC! We WILL find a way to do this.

See you tomorrow for the next round.

Earther, emailed you the dll, it is 1kb smaller than the orig

Also found this interesting post on not loading the ncpa.cpl

    Registry entry

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\don't load]
    "ncpa.cpl"="No"

Can we check this as well

Coinnach . . . Thanks. I have enabled email so you can send it along. Sorry the time difference has us out of sync. Just checking in briefly - I'll be off line most of the afternoon (CST).

OK I HAVE a solution to the dll from H3LL!

I tried knoppix but since you are using a NTFS file system you cant write to the hardrives BUT there is HOPE.

What I did was create a dup of the dll called netshell32.dll (for testing purposes) I then booted into safe mode with command prompt (no networking or anything else)

once into safe mode I simply cd'd to the winnt\system32 folder, deleted the netshell.dll and renamed the netshell32.dll to netshell.dll, rebooted out (actually just hit the power button) and rebooted back into windows ... works like a charm!

BTW, I cant take all the credit for this ... my buddy Bill (the hardware wizard) suggested it..

anyways it works perfectly so here's what needs to be done:

    1. I need to know what safe mode options XP has (been a long time since I looked) .... what we need is either safe mode WITH command prompt or MAYBE safe mode without networking (if command prompt isnt available in XP)

    2. once into safe mode just follow the instructions to delete and rename - of course youll have to have already saved the moded dll into the winnt\system32 folder so its easy to just delete and rename to new one to the old name!

Just doing a quick check-in . . . that solution just seems too straightforward and simple. What's the glitch?

Anyway, while it SEEMS simple, I don't know that I have ever worked in safe mode so another learning curve. Maybe we should wait for Coinnach to check in? I'll be able to spend time on this in a few hours.

Its so simple we all missed it! (They always tell me you could hide an elephant behind a telephone pole and Id never notice it! )

Im busy till later anyways so maybe after dinner would be better for all.

Safe mode is really simple .... not to worry!

From XP Help to answer your question:

You can choose the Safe Mode with Networking option, which loads all of the above files and drivers and the essential services and drivers to start networking, or you can choose the Safe Mode with Command Prompt option, which is exactly the same as safe mode except that a command prompt is started instead of the graphical user interface.
I'd prefer to go with the GUI but that might not work if the LAN is enabled. Till later . . .

Your going to have to choose Safe Mode with Command Prompt option ... Im afraid ANY GUI MIGHT put a lock on the dll !

that way nothing loads the dll....

Its REALLY easy! when windows loads literally ALL you have is a command prompt window. ... just like you were working in last night. once in you'll do these simple commands (it defaults to the c drive)

    cd winnt\system32

You will then be in the system32 folder and the path will then read:

    c:\winnt\system32>

    then you do

    del netshell.dll

    then do

ren (whatever the moded files name is) netshell.dll

    then type

    shutdown

NOW the shutdown command is SUPPOSED to work on win XP but I have nothing to test it with ....... BUT not to worry, IF it doesnt work type: exit (that will close the dos prompt) & then you can just hit the power switch. Its not like in windows when you hit the power switch ... there shouldnt be any problems. Ive done it 3 times on my laptop with no ill effects.

MAYBE Coinnach can quick test it to see if the shutdown works though ... this way you know!

OH and BTW, dont get nervous when it takes a LONG time to boot in ..... safe mode is slower than death!

That seems really clear and easy. Another winner from you!! I really am a quick study so am thinking there won't be a prob.

I just rechecked my .dll.mod the offending icon seems to be gone -

    +Icon Group
    |
    |
    |
    195
    |
    *1033

no longer exists. However, the file size AND the timestamps are identical to the .dll. Makes me wonder . . . . maybe Coinnach will email me his version in a bit so I can compare.

    Off Topic:

My next project will be getting a server running on my desktop so I can learn PHP etc. I bet you can point me to a good Apache, MySQL, PHP 4x installer.
