BTW, have you tried to find the dll yet? IT MAY not be where they say it is as youre running XP I found it here:

and if youre not good in a cmd line heres a couple of quick commands

dir - means show all files and folders

    you can also do a

    dir nets*

which brings back everything that starts with nets

    to go up one folder:

    cd ..

to go into a folder do

    cd folder_name

and instead of retyping a command you can use the up and down arrows to scroll thru commands you already typed!

So are we ready to take the plunge??

I think so. You've provided an excellent tut. Need to cool off a bit - been our pruning and sawing. Then I have to image, back up the .dll file and it's show time. If I backup the .dll to my second internal drive will windows find it or does it need to be out of the compi altogether? Maybe I should save it as .dll.org?

Oh, by the way . . . be as silly as you want. I know first-hand what these brain twisters do to am otherwise sane mind!!

SANE? Oh you definately have the wrong person there!

I think renaming it to .org will handle it nicely .... and with the image in hand if it screws up you have plan B anyways!

I can only find that one netshell.dll file. Cannot find dllcache or ServicePackFiles. Searched my entire C drive. Hmmm . . . think I should go ahead anyway?

Yeah I wouldnt worry about them .... that could be for another OS..

The only last thing I would do would be do a full system search for that dll

OH did you make sure you have hidden and system folders showing? go into explorer and go to tools > folder options and click on the tab (look at the pic) and then make sure the show hidden files is checked

Then check for the dll again!

Yup, that one of the first customizations I did. Some other things have come up - like Survivor etc. - so this will have to wait until later tonight. Just so you won't wonder where I disappeared to . . . Besides there an electrical storm brewing so I need to shut this down for now.

Sorry guys, took me awhile to get on today, had to deal with some stuff at the shop. Searched XP and found the netshell.dll twice, once in C:\Windows\System32 and once in the ServicePacks\i386 - no entries for the dllcache so I guess all systems are go

Earther, you only found it once, does that mean you have servicepacked your version of XP?

Isnt the ServicePacks\i386 ONLY you you choose yes to save the SP files on the machine for rollback?

If she chooses no I dont think she'll have that folder.

Welcome back! XP was installed with SP 2. All updates are current. I'm searching again right now. Nope, no ServicePacks\i386. Only i386 folder is in the Driver Cache folder where the sp2.cab is located.

    I'll be back in an hour . . .

    It's that time!

The storm has passed and I'm about to do the backups before trying the fix. Are you guys going to be around in about 20 min so if I get stuck I can get some real-time advice?

OH and I forgot the 2nd part of that

    after gdisk 1 /del /all

    of course we need:

    gdisk 1 /cre /pri /sz:33% /for /q

    and then

    gdisk 1 /cre /ext

    and then

    gdisk 1 /cre /log /sz:50% for /q (twice mind you)

    then

    cd f:

    cd i386

    winnt

boom your done ......... there's your "rollback"

OH but I did miss installing smartdrive there ... add

    cd a

    smartdrv

and THEN back to the f drive!

I swear I could do that in my sleep!

and they waited, nerves on edge, adreniline pumping, edgy to the end. They waited for the response they hoped would come while dreading the worst that could happen.

Oh how the clocked seemed to stall ... every tick of its mechanics a seemingly endless interval

but still they could not look away ...... so they waited

    Help!

    More like the Twilight Zone.

Got to the point where I end tasked explorer.exe and started to enter commands. I just can't get the commands to work - undoubtedly something basic like when do I hit enter or repeat cd.

    cd\
    cd windows\system32
    ren netshell.dll netshell.dll.org
I entered cd\ then hit enter which got me to C:\>

Then after C:\> I typed cd windows\system32 then hit enter and got

    C:\>windows\system32>

Then I tried typing the ren thingie after that but can't get it to work. HELP!
