    Project not finished by coder!

    Hello,

I hired a sitepoint member to do work for me,(customize x-cart) and the work was not finished. This member gave me a few options to resolve but now I can't get the member to respond to any form of contact by me.

I know others have been in this situation before. What options or steps did you take to resolve this?

    Regards,
    the counselor

Well whats the programmers name, if he think she has done nothing wrong then tell us the name... Thing is, maybe this happens alot like the people that dissapear 1/2 way through a design contest... Report him, bad rep him. PM him cause you know when they read those...If you still get no response, post his name. This would have to be the 5th time I have heard of this happening.
One client had paid a programmer from here and they did nothing, no work at all.

Yeah sometimes people dont realize when Igor is kidding!

All in all the others are right, if you have a contract invoke it, or dont pay until its done.

Also have you checked to see if this member has been around. Sometimes things happen to people (sickness accident etc) and they may not be able to reply at the moment. Hopefull that hasnt happened but it is possible.

Really? Or are you being sarcastic?

Counselor, if you haven't paid yet, just hire a new guy. If you have paid, ask for a refund if he can't finish the job. I've been hired for jobs before where something came up and I wasn't able to finish on time. I simply refunded the client their money and went on my way. I don't think it'd be too much to ask.

Sitepoint is a great place for finding artists and coders etc., but it does seem to be vulnerable to situations like this.

I like, and use, rentacoder, which seems to control the work payment process better.

Maybe sitepoint could develop this sort of facility, too.

I only paid a quarter of the project to get him started.

I was offered to options which one was to refund the money but I refused it because I was also given the option of him finishing the work with more time at the price of the first payment.

I think this person is a good programmer so I wanted him to finish the job.

    I agree Mike.

This is a great forum with a lot of talent, not to mention the good spirits of most of the members, but i'm finding out that it is vulnerable to situations like mine.

I don't like to outsource so I try to stay away from rentacoder.

    The member is "2slick".

I don't want to give this member a bad rep right now because I have had other projects were members have had family tragedies etc.. but if anyone else has had this problem with this member please post.

No seriously. You know how it is - The less you know, the happier you are. I think that can be applied to risks like Hiring Coders too.

By outsourcing, do you mean giving work to non-Americans?

My last project over there was with a Portugese programmer (fellow European), but bids were received from countries including USA, Australia and Canada. I was able to chose my coder based on my criteria, ie it doesn't have to be the cheapest and I could specify a location if I wanted to.

WHO knows ..... there's no damn sarcastic button!

If you need your project done I would say get your cash back and move on... you could spend months playing email tag with them and as we all know time is money!

Yes, I mean giving work to non-Americans but the wink
I put at the end of my statement implied that I do give work to non-Americans online and off depending on my circumstances(money, time, money). Well I did buy X-Cart so I guess quality of product is a factor also.

I'm going to hire an American for a big project I just received because of the situation I'm in now. If he/she tries to skip out on me my travel expenses will be less when I show up at there place of business.

I think a lot of people put those two as one and the same, but they are not. Outsourcing is just the act of having some work done by another person outside the company. This doesn't mean you have to hire someone outside the US or another country, it just means that you give the work to someone other than your own staff (or yourself).

There are many freelancers and businesses that participate in outsourcing (myself included). I have a relationship with a few companies who do not have a programmer in-house, so they will contact me to do that work. Yes, there are probably programmers out of the US that are cheaper than myself, but whether you want to go that route or not is up to you. Many prefer to stick with workers within the US just for a more "secure" option with fewer possibilities of issues (communication being #1).

Is it safe to assume then that you didn't sign a contract with him?
