Laptop owners: Trackpoint or Touchpad ?!?

Just wondering which navigation method is liked more .....

Trackpoint is one of those little 'knob'-like pointer in the middle of the keyboard area.

Touchpad is a square/rectagular area at the palm-rest part of the laptop.

    av1998,

I like Touchpad much beter than Trackpoint. It just seems like a quicker way of navigating. With Touchpad, the mouse buttons are closer. I like "a lot" of space to work with. I can't see the logic of placing a little, red dot in the middle of a bunch of keys.

I don't own one, but I do use one a lot.

I like Trackpoint better. However, when I have a table to put it on, I have a mouse I bring with me and plug it in, thats the easiest by far.

    c) Trackball.

I dislike the response that a trackpoint or touchpad gives. A lot of laptops let you clip an optional trackball onto them, I don't know if any come with trackballs built into the actual keyboard though.

    I don't regularly use a laptop.

I prefer touchpads over the little eraser things (trackpoint). Maybe it is because I use them a lot more, but I have a lot more control. I have used a few laptops that have trackballs built in, and I think that would be the easiest of all to pick up on.

Even though I prefer a mouse if possible, I manage quite well with a touchpad. Gaming (epsecially FPS) would be nearly impossible without a mouse.

Touchpad, hands-down ... you have bad ones with slow response rates but higher-end laptop systems have great touchpads - it takes some time getting used to, but it's worth every inch IMHO

but when i have the chance, i always rig up a USB mouse

Definitely the touchpad. I have used both and ther eis no competition. Believe it or not I actually use the touchpad all the time, even when I am at home and could easily plug my mouse in. I have not noticed any lag on mine at all, at it comes with Synaptics Touchpad software so that you can have a greater control over how the touchpad reacts. I LOVE my touchpad.

maybe my hands are too dry or something...

But the touchpads never seem to work for me. No matter how I mess with the setting, it always skips or doesn't move easily. I used to sell laptops and tried it on various models and it always kinda sucked. The eraser type thingee is a little better, but not much. Optical mouse is the way to go! Trackball isn't bad either...

I've been trying them out in the stores, that's my dilemma. When I finally see a a laptop that has the the most bang for the buck it's got the lousy trackpoint setup. I find more often than not, it's missing the whole cap and there's just this black post sticking up from the keyboard. I'd prefer the trackball myself, and would like to get one that has it built in. I don't see many of these in the stores anymore, so i'd probably take the touchpad simply for it's extra durability over the trackpoint and pick up the trackball as an accessory. I use a touchpad mouse at work, it's one of those Kensington Webracer ones, nice features but took a heck of a lot of getting use to.

    I hate them both

I use either a mouse or just the keyboard shortcuts

This happens to a lot of people, and what it usually is is that the person is touching the pad with more than one finger. That causes the mouse to jump all over the place. Just letting you know

The Trackpad is my choice. It's on my old Thinkpad here and works fine. I have used the touchpad type once or twice probably, but it just feels unnatural. I might like it more the more I use it.

Mostly, though, I plug in a regular mouse and use it alongside.
