    Any complications with giveaways?

In order to both promote my website and help brainstorm for a new branch of it, I'm thinking about offering a $100 gas card to whomever comes up with the best idea that I can use. Are there any complications/legalities with giveaways, or can I simply mail them the certificate?

I don't think there would be any complications. I would have a disclaimer saying that the card does not hold any cash value and should not be resold or something along those lines.

Whenever these kind of things come up I think it's best to consult a lawyer.

Lawyers are always the suggested way of doing things, haha, but unless I'm a big company with money to waste (I'm not), that just isn't going to happen.

Well, I really don't think you'll run into any issues... Just put up a disclaimer.

It's better safe than sorry. Since what you're basically doing is a contest, you will need to find out what the laws are regarding contests in your state. I'd spend the $100 and consult an attorney to see how to legally do this.

Lil Red is completely right; running a contest does not mean just posting the offer on your website and collecting data. You need to know if your country/ state has any specific limitations or regulations over contests. You also need to be figure out who is eligible to participate based on their country and the laws that may govern contests there.
