    connecting to mysql problem

I've seen many post's about this problem on the forums and have tried all the solutions that I have read about but nothing has fixed my problem yet.

    Heres my setup.

Win XP Pro - with IIS.

    php 4.3.10
    mysql-4.1.7

I've got php working just fine, and mysql is working fine from the command prompt.

I've tracked down the problem to the mysql_connect() function, If I leave the username and password fields blank, then it works fine, but as soon as I try using any username + password from mysql the system stops working.

    example : $dbcnx = @mysql_connect('localhost', '', ''); works
example : $dbcnx = @mysql_connect('localhost', 'root', 'pass'); does not work

Heres the mysql info from phpinfo().

    Active Persistent Links 0
    Active Links 0
    Client API version 3.23.49

    Directive Local Value Master Value
    mysql.allow_persistent On On
    mysql.connect_timeout 60 60
    mysql.default_host no value no value
    mysql.default_password no value no value
    mysql.default_port no value no value
    mysql.default_socket no value no value
    mysql.default_user no value no value
    mysql.max_links Unlimited Unlimited
    mysql.max_persistent Unlimited Unlimited
    mysql.trace_mode Off Off

    Thanks guys.

I wish my computer would do what I want it to.
Not what I tell it to do...
