Is it me or are there a lot of Trolls lately

Is it just me but does it seem like there are a LOT of trolls around here lately? Funny thing about that too .... just as one goes away a brand new one shows up within a day (and sometimes the same day) or two...

Other funny thing is these new trolls seem to gravitate back to posts that were being hammered by the trolls that just left, while also finding new posts to reek havoc in.

    Strange conicidence isnt it?

Other strange coincidence is getting 2 (attempted) negative reps from the same post that EVERYONE but these trolls seems to really be enjoying (and the trolls are trying to turn into a screaming match).. luckily trolls dont know they have no negative rep to give..

Just strikes me a touch, oh how shall I say this, odd??

Methinks we have a tricky one here ......... Anyone else noticing this strange phenomenon?

We've had the same banned member rejoin over a dozen times now in the past few months.

if anyone notices any excessive trolling, just report the posts and we'll deal with it.

Have you tried to ban his ip?

vBulletin Options > user banning option > add ip

Use the report button! We nail.

Maybe we should discuss tighter membership guidelines on sitepoint, like a grace period of a day when you cannot post with a newly registered account. Kind of annoying, but it increases the value of a membership, and a financial forum I was participating in used it with great success.

That's how they do it at the Adult Swim forums at Cartoon Network, which one can imagine must attract trolls like winnie the pooh to honey... but I have no idea how effective it is, since those are forums I stay away from--since it attracts so many trolls. Heh.

I think that's an idea that should be considered, though.

That only works when you have someone on an ISP that gives them a static IP.

Unless you want to block the entire ISP.

well Im keeping my eye on one ...... I wont yell until I either have proof or this person really gets out of hand (again?) .... right now its just mildly rude - annoying. It was just funny because this person showed up within 3 or 4 hours of our "everything bold" troll disapearing. I also looked around at what else they had posted and it seems annoying people is a hobbie!

I just find it amazing that some of these trolls put so much effort into annoying people ....... I WISH I had the time to concentrate on anything I didnt really have to do that much (not annoying people, just anything but work).

And yes I know blocking the ISP doesnt work ...... tried it on a site I ran years ago on an AOL person and shut down access to a couple hundred thousand AOL users..

The no post for a day rule would work really nice to prevent spam, but I don't know how much help it would be at eliminating trolling. I think the best way to deal with trolls is to not respond to their posts other than simply to report them. If we don't take their bait, we won't "reward" their bad behavior. Remember all they are trying to do is get attention.

I agree ignoring them is the best policy BUT I intervened in a post the other day where a young lady needed some help and this troll jumped right in and was rude as they could be ....... to a new person who had only made her 2nd post! Now thats just not right and sends the wrong message to another new member about the people here .......

I DID appologize to her and asked her to ignore the other post and then tried to help ........havent seen her come back yet though.

The key reason I'm always opposed to punitive measures like the probational period for new members is that it punishes so many honest members and is a minor inconvenience to the bad ones. I'm sure that it would turn off far more honest members than bad.

I agree. Trolls will be trolls no matter what you do. The only effective measures against them is to encourage members to ignore them and to ban them as they come along. When deprived of the attention they want they go away.

Sounds like we all need to be a little more aggressive in finding and reporting trolls to forum admins. There will always be malcontents who take joy in causing grief for others. The best we can do is eliminate their posts as quickly as possible.

I often wonder if these are the same people who take joy in beating up homeless people or bullying other kids in the school yard. Alternatively, they could have been the ones bullied on the school yard and this is their way of lashing back.

Well I TRY to report them the second I see them but I havent been around much due to a massive project Im trying to get done.... sitepoint has become my "I need a break" spot ....... but I have been hitting the "bad post" icon a LOT!

What bothers me most is when one of these trolls attacks, degrades or trys to belittle someone else who is new (as with the case I mentioned before) because they may be a beginner or ask a beginner question.... thats a BAD impression to give someone new who is trying to learn... NOTHING worse than attempting to making a beginner feel stupid because they ask a beginner question! 99% of the time that beginner WONT fell confident enough to ever ask a question again!

I was just talking to my wife about these type people last night ....... they REALLY need to get a life! Some people just get this perverse pleasure in degrading or aggravating people and then sitting back laughing and yes they are probably the types who would pick on some homeless or disabled person ..... man that crap just sends me into a rampage like nothing else in this world. I literally would NOT be able to control myself if I personally ever saw someone doing that and would probably end up in jail because of what I would do to them!

I try to keep my emotions in check with trolls though because they do enough damage .... me screaming or ranting is just going to make it worse.

Sitepoint should hire someone to travel to the location of any troll and inhumanely torture them so they never come back.

Best thing to do woth trolls: once you have said what you had to say, do not keep on arguing, that's the very purpose of trolls: get you angry.
